Replace CV boot or complete drive shaft ?

Postby tonymtber on Sun, 15 Mar 2015 5:31 +0000

Hey guys. My Hilux has done 160000km and today I found that the drivers side CV boot has started to split (must be a small hole as i couldn't see it but could hear air when squeezing it).

I have a 2" lift on it and it hasn't done any hard core off road so the CVs should be good.

So considering the kms is it worth replacing just the boot or put a new complete drive shaft in? Also is it worth going to a longer drive shaft for the lift as recommended by some sellers ?

Cheers

I had the exact same issue, i bought a whole new one and a boot as well, I use the old one as a spare and put the new one in. You might as well while you have the hub off. At least that was my thought.

Just replace the boots. Just did mine this week.
I would only use a genuine kit wich are the inner and the outer boots, clamps and grease.
It's not too hard to do if you know what you are doing.
The clamp for the inner boot is hard to fit, i just used a big hose clamp, does the job aswell.

Cheers guys. Its the outer boot that's gone...is it possible to replace the boot without pulling the drive shaft out?

I'm thinking just doing the boot is the cheaper and easier option unless there is any advantage to putting the longer drive shafts in

I haven't seen any advantage putting longer drive shafts in. There are no bolt on or split boots for our hiluxes that I know of, you have you pull it out to do it.

Thanks Ultra. Once the drive shaft is out i gather that the CV joint needs to come apart to get the new boot one. Are they easy to pull apart? Any special tricks ?

Remove the inner boot, pull the tripod out of its cup then wipe down with a rag and look for a circlip, remove it and pull the tripod off the shaft. Pull the outer boot off, clean and refit the new one. TRD Luxxy told me that in another thread where I asked how to get a new boot on the outer joint.

x2
That's how I did it, I didn't even remove the complete shaft, I just removed the clamp from the inner boot and pulled the tripod out of the cup with the shaft still in the diff.
The tripod did need some serious hammering to get it off the axle tough.
Generaly speaking it would be possible to just move the stub axle out of the hub and tap the CV joint off with a brass hammer, but after speaking to a Toyata mechanic he told me it is very hard to get the CV joint off and it's much easier pulling the tripod out of the cup, that's why the genuine kit comes with both boots and clamps.

Cool. I think i'll do what you did and buy a new drive shaft and a new boot to keep the old one as a spare.

What brand drive shaft did you get ? There are plenty of after market ones available

$150 is alright, here in Perth repco quoted me $239 for standard height and $427 if I had a 2" lift

Hey guys. Just noticed my front drivers side cv boot is busted putting grease everywhere. So looking for a new cv boot kit. Are the split ones from Toyota any good ? Or what would you recommend.
Cheers.

I looked on EBay the other day and could get both for $260. For that kind of money I would not muck around with the grease! ;)

I can get the outer cv boot replaced by Toyota for $180. Does that sound fair ?

If you know tools and can read a manual you can replace the whole shaft for less not just the boot. Google hilux Moranbah weather. This is an online workshop manual.......
