Flashing 4wd dash light

Postby gjohnson on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 8:24 +0000

Hi all,
Noticed yesterday that the 4wd light on the dash that normally comes on when you select 4wd was flashing in 2wd. I couldnt find anything in the owners manual and I know Toyota could connect it to a computer and find the fault code etc but I am not near a dealership. Has anyone had this before or know what is wrong? I have recently had diff locks fitted and 4wd still works but the dash light flashes continuously. Just want to know if its serious enough to take a day off work to get to toyota or can it wait?
Cheers Greg.

Hey Greg,

How did you (or Toyota) sort out the flahsing 4WD dash light?
I've now experienced it a couple of times and Toyota at Windosr have not been able to sus it out. The flashing happened also after repalcing the transfer switch on the gearbox.

Thanks
Arthur

Has anyone got any updates on this problem.
Mine just started doing it today every 20 mins or so starts flashing. Cycled the ignition and it goes away for around 20 mins. No recent work has been carried out.

Hey mate I found out wat the problem was with my lux. The add box on the front of the diff which selects four wheel drive. Was full oh water and from wat I can work out I think the motor in the box shorts out every now and then.which makes it flash. Got mine fixed on warranty. Apparently cause by water in the diff

Hey defer64,

Not sure if you are still having this problem, but the 4wd light usually flashes when the last change from 4wd to 2wd has not been completed for 30 minutes.

Must be a problem with your 4wd engaging.

I would have thought it would have thrown a code though.

Cheers,

Ben,

4x4 Light Flashing

Postby MarkYounger on Sat, 25 Aug 2012 9:31 +0000

The other day I was driving down a gravel road in 2wd and had not used 4wd that day. All of a sudden I noticed the 4wd indicator flashing! I slipped it into 4wd then back out and it went off. I was wondering if anyone knows why this may have happened. Will it happen again? How much will it cost me?

Yep this happens to mine (SR5) after every 4x4 trip. Im pretty sure the ADD box get filled with water from the 4wding or the hose down after.

It will start flashing after a 20-30 min drive and i just put it into 4x4 then out again and it goes away.It normally stops after a week once it has dried out.

Not sure what to do.... (if anything)

is there some proximity switch that detects the position of something that could be fouled with mud or dirt or something?

Yeah mines sr5 too. Sounds about right as we have been coping a bit of rain, and I rinse my truck off every time after I go out. Nobody have pics of exactly what you're talking about? I'd hate to mess up my ADD.

Mines now giving me trouble with the indicator light on the dash not lighting up intermitently when i put it in 4x4 and im nearly 100% sure its because the light falshes sometimes. It left me wondering whether or not it was in 4wd.

I asume i just have to replace the black ADD unit on the front diff...

Pulled the ADD unit off the front diff and it was full of muddy, rusty water.

Got a price from Toyota for a new one... $635!!!! Ive got a mate who knows a bloke in Toyota Parts and managed to get the price down to $475 which is still a complete joke, for an electric motor in a plastic case!

Unsuprisingly i am unable to purchase just the ADD unit alone, im also paying for the part where it mounts on the front diff, the entire unit is one part, which means they can charge you more for it.

Im waiting for a couple of wreckers to get back to me with a price on 2nd hand units.

In the meantime i cleaned my original unit out, which is just basically an electric motor with a switch and reinstalled in the hope just just the water was causing problems, but 4wd still insnt engaging so im still on the hunt for a new ADD unit.

Bit the bullet and got a brand new ADD unit from toyota. i managed to get it for less that the recomended retail of $635 through a mate, but it still wasnt cheap. $480 + 2 L of diff oil + gasket goo

Fits step was removing the old unit from the front off the diff housing. As i started to undo the bolts, diff oil started seeping out and i relised i would have to drain it. 2 10mm allan key bolts on the diff for the drain and refill. I also had to shoot out and get some diff oil. SR5 front diff takes 1.7L

Old ADD unit removed. I noticed that there was very little gasket material on the surface where it mounts to the diff.

Image
Old ADD unit appart. you can see the water marks inside. The ADD unit has an electric motor which moves a series of gears which slide the arm left and right to engage/ disengage drive to the drive shaft.

Image
Image
Old Breather off the ADD unit. Check out the hole in where some vandal from ARB has carelessly ripped it off with a set of pliers when i got my lockers installed in March. That would be the source of the water in the ADD unit and the cause of all my problems. Thank you ARB Artarmon!

New ADD unit in Place. With my shiny new breather hose! It didnt come with a gasket so i just made a new one using gasket goo

Refilling front diff oil. Patent Pending on the garden hose. The hose fitted perfectly into the filler hole and the spout of the oil container. I just had to cut a hole in the container to speed things up. Removing the front left wheel is the best way to get access to the drain and refill holes. I had to use a 10mm allen key for the drain as the large Monster Rides diff drop bracket prevented getting a socket in there.

So now I have 4x4 again! If anyone notice's their 4x4 light flashing, i suggest you check for water in the ADD unit so you dont have to do all of the above
