Diesel Bug

Postby snapperbasher on Sat, 12 May 2012 4:10 +0000

Hey guys,

Have recently just had issues with algae in my diesel fuel tank. It first started about 8 -10 weeks ago when on a drive back from Toowoomba to Brissie I suddenly had a lack of power just barely noticible at first but within a couple of minutes it got worse until i pulled over in an emergency stopping bay and the engine completely stalled.....tried starting again but no good.. popped the bonnet to look for any issues there....looked fine... got back in tried to start and it started.... little rough at first but came good..... so continued driving... about 10kms later same thing happens. I pulled over again let it sit for 5 mins or so then started again, Seemed like a fuel issue to me (starving) still had 1/4 tank left but manage
d to get to a servo and filled up.... well for 10 weeks i never had a drama.... I spoke to toyota but they couldnt shed too much light on what it may have been so with a service due next week i thought i would have them check it out properly
Never got to the service and this week I had the same problem on my way to work once again with about 1/4 tank left. So with a big trip across the simpson planned in august I had the car towed straight to toyota to diagnose the problem while it was happening.....well long story short i have/had a Diesel bug which has completely blocked my Fuel pickup which has a nylon sock/filter on the bottom. This nylon sock is not replaceable so had to fit a new pickup/sender unit ($340) and drain and flush the tank and fuel lines also replace the fuel filter. I will now run a biocide through the tank to kill any left over algae and replace the filter again in a few weeks.

Glad they got to the bottom of the problem now!! could do with out these kind of issues on a big outback trip somewhere!!!

Some photos below of the fuel pickup.

Ive never seen one that bad before.... Surprised that it would run at all...
Make sure you use th Toyota additive as they wont warrant injectors if you use other stuff

Hey Skog,

The Hilux is 2005 and has 220 kms on it so way out of warranty anyways.... but in saying that i was planning on using toyota additive...

I'm hoping this issue hasnt caused any problems with the fuel system.... Toyota didnt seem concerned when i asked...

Id be changing the fuel filter for sure and checking for water in the fuel in your fuel filter.
The diesel bug needs water to survive so at one point or another you copped a bad lot of fuel with water in it.
Your fuel filter should strain out the bug but it is the water in the diesel which wreck the injectors and pump.
Cheers
Mark

Diesel Bug

Postby mattz on Sun, 13 May 2012 6:19 +0000

I run a diesel additive in my ute and my truck.....once every 2-3 months. I was also told by a diesel specialist not to add it to often as it can cause more damage than good but a few times a year should be fine.
Most if these additives will kill the bug.....but you should check.....it should tell you on the bottle.

Wow never seen anything like that! So is it the intank pump inlet that we are looking at there? Just wondering how easy/hard it would be for the average bloke to drop the fuel tank and take a look at it at home....

Ive fitted a racor 445 unit before the main toyota filter and it has saved my twice now. Its got a water detection light and buzzer and thats gone off twice on seperate occasions after copping bad fuel. Not cheap but money well spent considering what would have happended if it went on thru to the stock filter...
