they are all on a bit of an angle. main reason that is because it makes it a lot more sturdy compared to if they were straight

it sure is a fraction of the price. The only cost was about $300 for the steel, $20 for some welding rods, $20 for some paint and $10 for the nuts and bolts. So only $350 all up excluding the original canopy roof, canvass sides and ply (floor & roof)

here are a few pics of my new freestanding canopy with the roof top tent and annexe

the annexe is a bit off the ground but hopefully when the car is loaded it will make the rear sit down a bit and solve the problem

yeah hopefully during the weekend coming I will start building some roller draws, fridge slide and general storage space inside the canopy. also relocating my deep cycle battery, mounting the solar panel infront of the rtt and connecting up all the electrics.

Looks good Ben
If you find that your tent is still too short to reach the ground try a local trimmer to make a 100 to 150mm wide panel with a matching zipper on both sides that you add in where the RTT meets the base tent.
I did that with mine

this is what i have designed for the inside of the canopy

the fridge will be on a slide but the rest of the draws will be reasonably light so they wont be on rollers. The pole area will also go the entire width of the tray and will hold the camping poles as well as the legs for the freestanding canopy. I can also chuck a 20L water drum in the stove area aswell. the whole shelving area will be about 500mm wide with the rest of the canopy able to carry the bigger stuff

i thought about using rollers for all of them but it would take too long and cost more. the way i see it is the simplier the better

Re: Ben's white_hilux - 32's or 33's ?????

Postby white_hilux on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 6:36 +0000

well I just scored a set of patrol rims and Mickey Thompson ATZ 5-rib tyres off ebay for $500. I will be painting the rims black.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261077352998 ... 1423.l2649

Now the next step will be selling my current rims (15x8) and tyres (32x11.15r15 Bighorns) for a set of muddies that will fit the new patrol rims. I will be getting bfg km2 but im undecided about the size. I will either go 265/75r16 (32) or 285/75r16 (33). what do you guys think?

I am leaning towards the 32 as I dont want to attach police attention as much and I dont want to affected the gearing too much and I also dont want to be cutting the car with an angle grinder to make 33's fit.

Stay with the 32's. Your lux is plenty capable with that size tyre.

You've now got lockers mate so stick with 32's, unless you think you need the 33's

Or.. keep your 32's for the street and put a set of 33" Silverstones on your black Patrol steelies :D

You know you want too..

Seriously though, 32's are much much better for the street, but for the bush........

rod it is very tempting to go that way but I dont have that kind of money at the moment and I have tried having two sets of tyres and i was getting sick of changing between the two every few weeks. so i will just be sticking to the one set
