Please bare with me whilst I try and get this thread in order... It's taking me ages to get some time and motivation so I thought I'd at least throw it down in raw form and edit it as I go along for those that are looking to head down this path... If possible, please dont post until I get the thread finalised a little more...

Cheers Quinny...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly,

Like customising your 4b... you need to work out what YOU want from the system and not worry about what the other bloke has got... thats for posers

Secondly,

Think about it before you start purchasing or cutting... even after doing this, you're still going to smoke a few items and change a few things once underway...

Thirdly,

Not sure about three yet... But im sure there is one!

Forth,

Draw up your electrical runs and work out where they are going and where you'll mount things... it may change but your better of getting as much of the cable you need along with fuses and distrabution blocks...

Fifth,

This goes a little against the first, but learn from others... Keeping in mind what your trying to achieve...

Did you look at a solid state hard drive? Heaps less chance of platter damage because there is no platter :D

What does it do? :D

One of those touch screen monitors would be way cool.

Now my main aim was to get Ozi Explorer on a big screen so I could do alot of planning on the run... We tend to go trecking and sometimes there is a need to change your original plans... (Like at 2 am in the pissing down rain half way between Mytrleford and Wonangatta when faced with a tree the thickness of the Lux and nothing but the ASS to deal with it - For a better description of the ASS see the Tallarook 09 thread)

So, I wanted Ozi, Plenty of map storage, Road Navigation, MP3's and video playback mainly... Other items that would be a bonus included, OBD connection and the ability to hook up to my Xede chip to program it. (The xede is fully programable with 2 map banks for multiple maps or 1 blank and 1 modified map to allow for normal operation when required)

I alo wanted to be able to upload photo's when on the move to clear out my SD cards (Not as big an issue now days with 4 - 32G SD cards available at a good price)

Now a few of the IT guys at work had already gone down this path with laptops and I was initialy going to go down this path but the cost of the above unit was only $500 inc delivery and I had another use for the laptop I was going to use...

Now for debates about whats better, go to mp3car.com and cut loose, I simply found that the technology had caught up with user requirements and the above unit had all the power supply and much of the tricky stuff built in ready to go in an integrated package...

I also cheated here, one of the guys mentioned above also thought the same and replaced his laptop with the above unit, So I let him do the XP setup and tweaks, Centrafuse install basic setup... (This was a big step for me as Im from Infra structure and this guy was a developer! - Again... more IT humor)

Screen wise I went with the 8" Wide screen, mainly due to the fact i already owned it and Im a tight arse, but also coz I wanted the bigest screen I get manage to fit in...

So of with the centre dash console and lets try it on for fit...

Some cutting required but nothing I wasnt prepared to do...

So how to join it all together?????

Well... It all needed to go behind the back seat so first order of business was to unbolt the back seat and complete the rear seat mod allowing it to fold down when mounted. So out with the hack saw and into it....

Done..

Now for the cabling... Now all credit to this needs to go to my mate Nathan who pretty much drew out a mud map in my office in 2 minutes flat and then helped me grab it all in one lunch time at work... No running back and forth in the middle of the job to grab that extra bit here and there...

Now the list of cable goes something like this and I'll confrim when Im back at work and grab the reciepts..

6M 1 red and 1 black 30 Amp Cable
30M Roll of 3mm gauge dual strand wire
25M Speaker wire
Packet of assorted blade fuses
Fuse box for blade fuses
Inline fuse for 30 amp cable with a 30 amp fuse
Stereo Adapter from Super Cheap... (DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE THE AMOUNT OF TIME THIS BABY SAVES U)
Power distrabution blocks.. (go the larger ones.. 5mm per block I think)
Connectors - General blade connectors
Connectors - Battery connectors for the 30 Amp cable..
2 of the big grey connectors for the 30 Amp leads... Allows them to be disconnected easily....

LOL... Sorry my decription of these parts isnt brilliant... like I said... Im no sparky... I'll most likely come back to this section and update it if I've forgotten anything...

That's more or less the same display I'm putting in and I'm presently pondering how I'm going to cut that annoying bar (see my blog for pics).

Are you keeping the display intact with casing? Are you removing your clock?

I find that with the screen sloped at the same angle as the dash, there is quite a bit of shine on the scren from driver position. However, pushing the bottom of the screen in for a more vertical orientation gives a much better picture - but leaves gaps at the side and bottom.

I'll be interested to see how you do this and will copy you!!

thought i'd dig this up n ask a Q!
I was thinking of using a monitor like this, Glare would be no problem! But would the resolution be enough for Ozi explorer n street nav? 16:9 ratio, 800x600 res

Sorry mate. It is no good as it is not a VGA monitor, just a video monitor. I would be looking for a Liliput 7" or 8" touch screen. (Quinny's is 8". I've got the Xenarc 706TSA which is pretty awesome but it did go back to the US for repair under warranty). The Xenarcs were generally considered a better monitor but the 706TSA has proven a bit of a dog so the rankings have changed.
