You guys on here are amazing with you giving of time and expertise so generously. Many thanks. I'm happy to be member 003 of the HiLuxCarputerClub.

Quinny, you can send that Beer to the UK if you want but it'll do me no good, I'm in Ireland.

I think I got the drivers installed OK but you're right, of course, Windows really does know how to make a mess of drivers. Plus, the drivers I first used from the reseller site were dated 2002, I had to find updated 2009 drivers on the device manufacturers site. I installed them over the older ones so there may be an issue there as well.

My plan is to take one of the (many) spare PCs I have lying around and install the ELM device on that and try again with fresh uptodate drivers. Failing that, I'll take my setup to another car as suggested and see what happens.

I'm fairly au-fait with this IT stuff as I'm a programmer by profession (hence my beeline for Hyperterminal - why let 3rd party software talk to my car when I can do it myself directly!)

I'm actually running my laptop on the 30 day windows non-auth period and 30 day centrafuse demo. This forces me to reinstall and reconfigure my test/build environment every so often which is a good thing - I get to keep the configuration settings an d software that work while eliminating all the old stuff. When I get it all working, I'll go through the whole licensing thing.

I'll keep you posted as to progress and will be updating my blog with a summary of findings when I've resolved this OBD issue definitively.

For goodness sake Peter you should not have let that slip, There will be no stopping our Quinny now. Have you seen what he has got on his signature block? I'm told he is of Irish stock and related to the Leprechauns you have over there. This is him here, the one that is vertically challenged:
Image

I am sure he would have been better of turning his truck into a Lowlux rather than getting 33's to fit.

Anyway, sounds like you are on the right track, maybe as part of your trouble shooting once you find a car that likes your OBD interface you could run a cable to the other vehicle from your Car PC and then if you will know if it is the PC or the Virgo :(

Hmm, I've seen taller leprechauns than that!

Well, the car pc is still pretty portable being a laptop that's not been installed anywhere yet.

Today I tried connecting to the (not so)iLux using a different computer - Win2K, desktop, onboard USB. Exactly the same (non) response - all the software finds the interface OK but fails on connecting to the ECU.

So, I've ruled out the laptop as the cause of the problem. I'll try to persuade my mother in law to let me connect a computer up to her 2009 Toyota Auris tomorrow.

On the positive side, I've notived that the car emits two beeps when an application first attempts communication. That has to be a good sign, right?

Yes. I thought it was a bluetooth connection to the laptop (it's the same beep the car makes when connecting to my Nokia phone via bluetooth). It happens once only on the first connection - a couple of beeps with about half second in between.

Well, it's been resolved. I don't have OBD-II.

I plugged the laptop & interface into my sister-in-law's 2005 Toyota Yaris and it could communicate immediately using any of the apps I tried. So, my laptop, inteface & software works great.

I guess I'll give up on this part of the project for the moment until I find out just what protocol my car speaks and find out if it's possible to access it using a PC.

Shame it does not work for you. I'ts all a journey of discovery and sometimes you buy things that don't work like OBDII and ASIO sound cards.
