P/s rear axle movement

Postby Kev1954 on Thu, 22 Sep 2022 3:31 +0000

Axle seal has been replaced twice on passanger rear of 2009 4x4 with abs and also did bearings etc but when it all bolts back on there is 10-15mm moment in and out with axle.

I would be checking the bearing and the retainer to make sure they are settled up tight on the axle stop

That sounds wierd?? I've done a few of them and the only thing that I can think of is that someone has fitted the earlier (narrower) bearing to the axle, but if that was the case you would see a large gap between the bearing and the ABS sensor ring.
I only have a picture of the narrow bearing, but this is roughly how much room there should be between the bearing and sensor ring.

It could be that the collar or bearing isnt pressed in enough as dave g pointed out. I have seen that before.
I might be wrong.

Quite possibly true, but if that was thew case, the "C clip" couldn't have been fitted to retain the collar. It's a very close fit.
The same could be said if the bearing wasn't pressed all the way down on the axle - there wouldn't be a groove visible to fit the C clip.

Indeed. Its easy enough to forget thing especially if you've had a decent press seemingly push all the bits into the correct position.

But speculation hey... I get flamed sometimes for overthinking problems.
