Do I have heavy duty or stock suspension?

Do I have heavy duty or stock suspension?

Postby wije on Tue, 23 Nov 2021 5:29 +0000

Hi all. I just acquired my very first Hilux yesterday! I did my due diligence with a test drive before ordering and found the ride acceptable. However the vehicle I purchased is a very rough ride. 30min of highway / city driving and I feel shaken up! My vehicle is a 2021 SR trade in with 8000km on the clock. I will be testing the tire pressures shortly but I have a suspicious that the suspension might be heavy duty if the carsales ad from the dealership is to be believed. My question is, how can I check my suspension type?

Got a pic? the stock suspension is usually black sometimes with stickers of the part-number or barcode
I might be wrong.

FYI, the tyre pressure was 36PSI and dropping it down to 29PSI as recommended for no load help with the compliance a LOT! Still keen to know if the suspension is heavy duty.

They sound like Toyota OEM part numbers & brand, google searches indicate they are stock Hilux but I can't crawl under and confirm as probably like most here I don't have stock suspension.

Note also that Hilux Gen 8 (like most utes) is designed to be carrying a load and people using them unloaded as daily drives often complain about stiff suspension. When loaded up they are much more compliant.

Yes, it is the stock suspension but not sure if it is a heavy duty upgrade or standard stock suspension is all. My vehicle was a commercial trade in so either is possible.

I haven't heard of an OEM HD upgrade. When I got my 2016 build the only suspension option was different front coils for winch. Maybe someone with a current model can confirm if anything has changed.

This is from the spec sheet in the used car advert of my local Toyota dealer website. Not sure how accurate the details are in these for the individual vehicle vs generic specs they put up for the trade-ins.

Suspension
Independent Front Suspension
Suspension - Leaf
Suspension - Heavy Duty

OK out of curiosity I stopped at local Toyota dealer today and their answer was definitely no tick the box OEM HD suspension options available, only aftermarket.
I managed to check under 4 x stock 2021 build models on the floor (2 used & 2 new) before I was chased out, all had the same number 48210-0KC20-B which is different to your 48210-0KC80-A.
It's possible though this could be related to the updates announced in September which included suspension tuning to deal with your issue:
E.g. https://www.racq.com.au/living/articles ... ife-update
Extract here: "Firm unladen ride is a common criticism of utes and with this update Toyota has attempted to improve the HiLux’s rear suspension ride compliance."

Bushwalker8, thanks for the recon. As far as I can tell I have the latest update with a Feb 2021 build date. A bit worrying if this is the new and improved suspension! :D

It's the tradeoff of it being a ute.
