SR workmate J Deck - tailgate lock

Postby MVL on Mon, 19 Dec 2016 9:00 +0000

gday all

First post

I have just bought a 2012 Hilux 4x4 workmate/SR with the double latch tailgate i also have a canopy fitted

The problem I'm having is even though the canopy is locked a decent pull on the tailgate will pop tailgate open i store a lot of tools in the tray and would like to keep the light fingered people off them

Has anyone done any mods to counter this ? or could put on a link to another thread

thanks
MVL

Had the same issue when I had a canopy. You might have to attach something on the inside that can take a padlock. Not ideal but can't think of anything better.

Just resurrecting this to see if anyone has any other ideas in 2021 short of the dead lock or tailgate replacement?

I haven't thought about it just yet, but all my solar gear will be going under my canopy and I'll need to do the same before long. Give me a little time and I'll let you know what I come up with. By the way, I'm kinda certain I'll be doing something tidier than a padlock on the inside. Already I'm thinking it'll be along the lines of being hooked into the central locking trigger with a few solenoids.

Do let us know what you come up with. I was thinking of installing the new Mountain Top evo roller shutter which doesn't have any external locks rather a lever on the inside which means it relies on the tailgate being locked. Alternately the the older Mountain Top roller comes with a locking option where the shutter locks to a catch installed on the inside of the tailgate which works but doesn't feel too robust given the tailgate is not secured so susceptible to be pried open with brute force.

Rob_Wood, does the canopy not "lock" the tailgate in place?

A few ideas here can be adapted from SR5 tailgate https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=271

How to tap into central locking https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=26481

OCAM sell solenoid kits
Heres one for a SR5 https://www.ocamindustries.com.au/tail-gate-lock-kit-toyota-hilux-n70-2005-15
You could use any solenoid / actuator for a simple bolt lock from the gate into the tub
