Hi guys.
Looking forward to gaining some knowledge from this forum & hope to catch up with some of you guys out on the tracks.
I recently purchased a stock standard 2011 SR dual cab with 232K on the clock. I'm now in the process of throwing some coin at it & have just purchased.
Phat bars Black Series fox 3" lift kit
SuperPro adjustable upper control arms
Phat bars diff drop
I just purchased an iDrive for the wagon as well.
Next job is rims & tyres, looking at either, 33x12.5x15, neg25 offset
285/75/16, neg22 offset
305/70/16, zero offset.
Then, Phat bars stainless snorkel, Muzz bar & winch followed by custom tray & canopy.
Last thing I'll do is a remap & tune.
Cheers.

Welcome.

Do you intend to register this in NSW?

3” lift and wheels with an offset less than 5P cannot be legally registered.

I don’t think any of those tyres are legal diameter either. Depends on if yours has VSC or not, VSC first appeared in 2011 but only on diesel SR5 from memory. Those had 265/65/17 tyres which are about 776mm and you have to stay within 50mm of that. SR were smaller from memory.

Registration isn't the problem, it's the police that might take an interest in it if it's too obviously modified. I'll be running some aftermarket flares to tone down the poke but realize anything over 2" is illegal. Just putting bigger tyres on a 2" lift & your already over the height restriction. Mines an SR, no VSC.

It’s also Insurance. If you have an accident and anything to do with the modifications is causal the Insurance Company can refuse the claim. And you may end up with nasty criminal charges. For example if yours has the small rotors (297mm) which are only designed for 255/70/15 tyres, and you go whacking on 285/70/16 tyres you will be losing a large % of your braking ability. I went from 255/70:15 to 265/65/17 and turned my rotors blue within a few months. Also changing your wheel offset from 30P to a negative offset changes the loading on the bearings dramatically. I know it is a big thing right now in NSW, Certifying Engineers have been told that the rules on track change must be adhered to. Going through it right now with my HK GTS.
I personally get nervous seeing (especially Rangers) getting around with huge tyres on tiny brakes with totally inappropriate offset, often towing way over their GCM. I’ve noticed Police nabbing a few down here lately too.

I really appreciate the heads up & am fully aware of what modifications & impact it has not only on the vehicle, but insurance, the Police & personal liability if something goes south. My brakes will be upgraded as well as my clutch. There's not too many stock standard Hilux's on this forum & reading through the various posts, there's very few legal Hilux's on here. In all honesty, I think the total 2" lift restriction is a total crock & the powers to be undoubtedly have never been off-road before & wouldn't have a clue why you need vehicle lift to go to those places. Tyres are the only way to increase diff clearance so it's either do that, or just stick to the road & or the beach.
Don't forget, at a cost, it can be engineered for the lift & tyres. Depending on costs, I might throw some coin at it & get in mod plated.

That’s what I was getting at, do it legally if possible as you never know what may happen, even if you have to sell it, far easier if all Engineered.
Brake upgrade is easy, just use 120 Series rotors and calipers (as per TRD Hilux). You’ll need 17” alloys or certain 16” steel wheels to clear the calipers though. As these were brakes as fitted to the similar series to yours, no Engineering involved (but you’d need it for the tyres). I doubt any Engineer will Certify a track change greater than 50mm though, going through that now with my HK, no chance with a track change greater than the max 25mm allowed on passenger cars.

X2 the police won't bother you as long as it's legal, just stick to the regulation and you'll be ok.

Yeah many of us have been down the seemingly endless rabbit warren of mods - the comments above reflect that based on their own experiences, which even I admit that some mods aren't worth it.

I suggest you look at the 33in thread for wheel fitment. In my view and experience, something closer to 32in (still illegal) tyres and 2in lift are the best combination for the n70 offroad. Definitely get the diff drop and adjustable UCA to keep it steering on track and to protect your CVs - but also have a search here as many of us have been down this path.

I appreciate though that you want build your own - I suggest you start a build thread so people can chime in and provide advice/help.

Anyhow...this is the standard cut-and-paste intro that we give everyone, but that said... welcome to the forum :)

Thanks guys for the welcome.
I do appreciate all & any advice & I'm sensible enough to take it all in & think really hard about it.
I haven't totally decided against the 32" tyres & it's why I purchased the adjustable lift kit, 2-3", so I can wind that back out to 2". I would like to run 33's & leave it at 3" for no other reason that aesthetics. I've seen quite a few mods around where they have a decent lift installed with smaller tyres with no poke & they just look tall & skinny & clumsily top heavy. The bigger tyres with a bit more poke beefs it up a bit & personally, to me, it just looks so much better. I'll keep looking through the threads, especially fitting the 33" tyres.
Cheers

You are limited too on a pre-2012 (other than 2011 SR5 diesel and 2008/9 TRD) with tyre diameter. In NSW the biggest tyre that just fits under the 50mm diameter increase is 265/65/17. A 275/65/17 is over a 50mm increase in diameter so no go. You can go bigger on the 2011 SR5 diesel and the 2008/9 TRD plus 2012 onwards as they were originally fitted with 265/65/17, but all those also have larger diameter rotors to account for the tyre diameter increase. So anything bigger than 265/65/17 (about 30.5” from memory) will need Certification, if an Engineer will even pass it which I doubt as the standard rotors are too small. You might convince one to look at it using the larger 319mm rotors off the 2011 SR5 diesel and then reset the standard tyre to 265/65/17. Then go up just under 50mm from there, a 285/70/17 is only just too big in that case, so maybe 275/75/16 (about 32 1/4”)?

Mine has 225/75/16 on it but I think the rims are 16x6".
If 285's are pushing it, I might have to look at 265's, probably still pushing it.

By the specs 225/75/16 are 744mm or 29.3”.

My 2011 SR5 had 255/70/15 which are 738mm or 29.05”

Both of these are suited to the 297mm rotors. I don’t think 225/75/16 are standard for SR though, I think it was a 205R16C which from memory is almost the identical diameter to the SR5 tyre.

What tyre size would you recommend?
Would I get away with 32's?

As I said mine is a 2011 SR5 but a V6 one which didn’t get 17” wheels until 2012 model. I fitted 120 ‘cruiser Grande 17x7.5 with 265/65/17 tyres (pretty much the biggest I could fit and stay under a 50mm increase) and my front rotors failed quickly. I changed to PBR T3 in the same 297mm size and then they were overheating too, so I then changed to the TRD 338mm size (same as 120 ‘cruiser) and no hassles since. The wheels I fitted are identical dimensions to the 2011 diesel SR5 as are the tyres so no scrubbing at all.
You might find an alternative to 265/65/17 that is slightly taller but still under a 50mm increase like say a 16” tyre in a different profile. I’d still at least change to 2012-15 319mm rotors and calipers, straight bolt on.

This is your friend https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/

265 65 17 is a very common stock size for prados and hiluxs fitted with 17 in wheels. It works out to be 777mm in diameter which is 33mm larger than the 225 75 16.

From memory the SR stock 20516C has a diameter of 734mm. So doing the math, the 265 65 17 are within the 50mm (or whatever it is now - I read somewhere its now a 7% increase in NSW) limit. Track width is another consideration.

I think it is pretty hard to find anything bigger than 265/65/17 that is legal. A 275/65/17 is over 50mm larger than the 255/70/15 which are 738mm.
As above your original 205R16C (205/80/16) are 734.5mm so the 265/65/17 is about 42-43mm taller.

These are by calc too, you have to look at the tyre manufacturer’s specs to get them exact as they vary a bit.

Just an update of how the Hilux is coming along & what's now installed.
3" lift kit. Phat Bars Black series, Fox shocks suspension
Phat Bars diff drop
Super Pro adjustable UCA's
Super Pro adjustable LCA's.
Phat Bars angled rock sliders
285/75/16 Maxxis Razr muddies on 16x8" steelies, zero offset. Had a slight scrub on plastic inner guard, drivers side when fully locked left hand down. Did a little trimming & now have full clearance.
Phat Bars stainless snorkel has arrived so that's on next. Then it's new bull bar & winch. Custom tray & canopy will be the last addition before looking at accessories, 12v setup, sleeping arrangements etc. I have the Redarc Manager 30 & the Redarc TVMS ready to install once the canopy is sorted.
