V8 Selection?

Postby Rob_Wood on Sat, 17 Oct 2020 1:48 +0000

Gypsy made me think of something (below).

Has anyone done a "small" V8 conversion? I'm just planning ahead, the 2004 diesel has only 320000km on it, so it'll be a while before I need to worry, but I was thinking about a 307 Chev (or smaller???) and put it on gas. Just wondering how hard it'll be to actually fit into the engine bay? Any ideas, thoughts or comments? Not looking for a super-car, just something that'll go up the hills a bit better than the naturally aspirated diesel while maintaining a modicum of fuel economy.

Engine can probably take it but you're trying to push more air into a two valve head! It can only breathe so much volume no matter how much boost. If you're trying for more power maybe transplant a 3.8 litre petrol engine or a 5.0litre V8.

Marks 4WD sell conversion stuff for many V8 engines for pre-2005. They have kits for donor V8 and auto or full bellhousing and clutch kits if you keep the Hilux manual box. So it depends on what you want. I’ve had 307 SBC in an FJ40 with the original 4spd, and a 283 with a TH400 in a MQ Patrol. Either are great little engines, but you might have issues with legal rego with such old engines. A better engine that will pass required emissions would be an injected 5.0L from a late Holden prior to LS engines being used across the board. The last Holden to use this engine was a VS which were sold new into 2001, although the final V8’s were sold prior to the end of 2000. These are a relatively easy conversion and you can get people to make you up plug in harnesses for them. The final ones used in those 1999-2000 VS had a roller cam too. The downfall of those engines though is they are short stroke (basically 3”) so don’t produce the torque of a 307/327 (3.25” stroke) or a 350 (3.48” stroke), but the trouble free running and economy advantage you get from the injected engine is worth it. You could rebuild one of those late 5L engines as a 350ci engine too, just buy a 3.48” stroke crank and pistons to suit if you rebuild it. The ECU has to be modded anyway to adjust the speedo feedback so you get it tuned for the extra ci at the same time.

I agree with hk, Mark's do good conversions but I wouldn't go with gas, the price of gas is getting close to unleaded! Also the added cost of lpg is just good money for bad outcome. Go for a small block as hk suggests, Holden 5.0 with fuel injection and it passes the regulation and if your not after a race car, look at the V6 late Holden's too, they make reasonable power with low fuel consumption. Another one worth considering is just slot a 4.0 litre V6 from a later Hilux or Prado, not much modification and it will slot straight in. Plenty of engine/transmissions from wreckers available. If you want more power, instead of lpg, go for a blower! HK might sell you his when he fits the Chevy LS to his. ;)
As an after thought, I've heard of many folks who went lpg on 80 series petrol only to burn valves etc. Most ended up with a Mark's conversion LS engine and were happy.

  now that would be a conversion that WOULD be a waste of energy!

Only mistake Gipsy is the term “Chevy LS”. There hasn’t been a Chevrolet engine since the late 80’s

Oops I really meant LSA  just showing my age now
After all LSA is just a development of the LS engines ;)
Regular Production Oder
The LSA is a designation code(RPO - Regular Production Oder) used by GM for their engines. It is a LS based motor that began use in 1997 and has several codes ranging from LS1, LS3, LS4, LS6, LS7, LS9, etc.Jul 17, 2012

LSA Crate Engine: 19331507 | Performance - Chevrolet
lsa engine from http://www.chevrolet.com
The LSA crate engine delivers 556 horsepower in a smooth, quiet, and well-balanced race engine - see images, dyno specs, installation info and more. ;)
Both LS9 and LSA are 6.2L engines biased on the LS3. ... Both are built to be 20% stronger than the LS3 short-block, according to GM, and even have forged (LS9) or hypereutectic pistons (LSA) with oil-spray cooling to handle the pushing power.Feb 20, 2010
And of course the LSA engine in the Chevrolet CAMARO is NOT a Chevrolet engine, it's a GM!
I must admit, the last Chevy engine I used was a 350 in my ski boat, and that was a few decades ago

A lot of guys put Toyota 1UZ's in them over here
It's a a bullet proof motor, a mate of mine runs on in a Class 1 off roader and he can't kill it
I also have a mate that put an LS7 in but it was a huge amount of work including a 9 inch rear end
He afraid to use it in anger in 4wd as the front end isn't strong enough
If your not prepared to stand behind our Troops
Then try standing in front of them

The N210 4Runner (2002-2009) which is basically a 120 Landcruiser (Prado) underneath was fitted with a 2UZ-FE with A750F auto so it maybe possible to find bits from the USA (like mounts, sump etc) to fit a 100 series Landcruiser 2UZ and A750F. Would be a fair bit of mucking around engine control wise though and the 2UZ only has marginally more power and torque than a 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 which would be far easier and cheaper.

All good info, thanks to all who posted.
The only reason I mentioned the 307 was it's what we put in the boat with a vicalen jet. goes OK for a timber hull half cabin.
When the ute does finally die the options will be dependant on the size of the boat I'll be pulling, the cost of the various fuels at the time and the relative economy of the engine choices available, the 3.0L turbo diesel from a Prado / Hilux of a later model is something that has also crossed my mind. I just like the thump of a nice V8, that's all. Had a 350 in the HJ with a slight lump in the cam, it would'a pulled the Queen Mary no worries.
Anyway, starting to digress. Thanks all for the thoughts / comments.
