Best years to buy?

Postby Denngeor on Sun, 05 Jul 2020 9:25 +0000

I’m looking to purchase my first used Hilux ute. Is there a general consensus as to what years are best?

If you want 2005-2015 that last year or two is the best as you get a better auto, bigger brakes, bigger tyres and higher towing capacity along with higher GCM. Although if you go for the V6 you get the better auto gearbox from the start but not the better brakes and towing capacity until about 2012.

Last of the gen7 (2015) no dpf issues and all previous issues resolved
Agree with hk1837 above, diesel or petrol both are the best of the bunch
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Yes the last of the gen7 (2014-2015) or the last of the gen8 (2019-2020) before the update lands and we learn what problems it has if any.
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger

Just bought MY12 facelift. Does it mean I have bigger brakes, better auto etc? How to check it? Know no one I could compare with.

If it is a V6 it will. If it is a diesel it will still have the awful 4spd.

If it is an SR5 it will have the middle size 319mm rotors, in which case it will have 17” wheels too.

Not sure when the skinny 16” wheel SR got larger brakes, others here will know maybe. VSC was optional on those early facelift SR, in which case they got SR5 tub and flares plus wide steel rims with the bigger brakes.

Best bet is to look on Redbook and it will give you an idea.

Tnx HK1837. It's a SR V6, with skinny silver steelies.
