Replace 1kd-ftv

Postby Landmann on Tue, 05 Nov 2019 5:40 +0000

Hello.
I’ve bought a 2013 with a defect engine. Been serching for some guidlines but haven’t found any.
What do i have to think about in this operation?
How do I know which replacement engines fit in my car? Electric and such
For what I can see, 19000-30760 is the one for my lux?

Thanks a bunch for reading my poor english :D

Really interested to see how you go with this!!!

Start a build thread so we can follow it Landmann. I'm planning on keeping my ute for a long time and was thinking an electric conversion would be the way to go in a few years.

I've been thinking about an EV conversion for a while as well. Plenty of blogs out there going through their builds eg this landrover http://www.goingbush.com/ptev.html

When ever I have money again I'll probably buy a wrecked tesla or similar EV and swap the parts over. There is already a small number of workshops doing this in the US.

But back to your problem, is there a 2nd hand engine available where you are?
I might be wrong.

Haha no worries mate :D

The real question is, from what timespan can I search a motor with the exact same spec?
Example 2011-2015

And is the some pointers when I’m taking the old engine out and the new in

It is going to be interesting because have only done engineswaps in -60s -70s cars

Hey there Landmann

Whats wrong with the engine?
Engine block?

boxhead55 wrote:Most gem engine shops which are all over australia. Will grind a crank to fit over size bearings. Last few blown piston blocks have been fully reconed by gem for 800 bucks.
That's a rebore pistons rings and big ends

Can become very difficult if ecu incompatibility issues arrise with new engine so if possible consider a reputable engine reconditioning workshop

Yes. Thats what i’m afraid of hehe

They said it had been leaking coolant and then it overheated.
Aqordingly to the toyota shop the engine was not worth saving.
But maybe it is? That could be fun, recondition the engine myself. My brother is quite good so he could assist me

I thought you aussies would have the best knowligde about this. I have a strong feeling of trust for you guys :)

 Don't trust me, I've never done this.
I'm sure you have explored other options... going EV would be fun too and it would make Greta Thunburg very happy ;)

I believe there are stock of brand new crate 1KD engines from Toyota if that's in your budget but if you have the skills, time and access to specialized recon workshop you should save a stack of money going down the reconditioning track... sounds like you may have to factor in a new water/coolant pump though

Ev is not for me, in sweden it is very costly, compared to out neighbours Norway who the guverment steps in and pay you for buying envirementfrendly cars... and hard taxes for cars with high emissions.

Right now I am need for advice from ya’ll.

For what I have figured out, late 2011-2015 the 1kd-ftv i exactly identic, 19000-30760.
I have found and going to purchise an engine with 90.000 kilometers
What do you guys think I should do with it?
Oil
Filter
Timingbelt
Fanbelt
Waterpump
Walveclerence

Appreciate all info and advice :)

I guess that photos is something you like :D

Yes a new crate is over the intended budget. Three times More expensive Than the engine i found and the crates are naked. A used engine in Sweden is often complete exept for the turbo

Just got it home and I began to check the oils, poor in coolant, drove it 3 kilometers, temp gauge went to about 75% of the scale, guessing its above 100 degrees celsius.
But the oil is fine, no bad knocking noise.
Replace or overhaul?

Thanks a bunch

Is this the old engine? If you drove it and found no problem then maybe just keep it in good shape with oil/filter and new coolant. Do you know where the coolant leaked? Water pump maybe?
Do the same as you suggested for the second hand engine
Oil
Filter
Timingbelt
Fanbelt
Waterpump
Walveclerence

Worth driving it after that and maybe you bought a bargain!
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I assume it is his own engine that toyota wrote off.
If it seems to run ok find the leak and see how it goes. I have heard the EGR coolers sometimes leak coolant into the induction manifold when they fail.
Get another mechanics opinion.

Hi again Landmann

For some unknown reason I have just seen the image you posted last month
That looks like a heavy trailer and machine - is that a rock driller? How heavy is the trailer loaded up?
Is your hilux auto or manual transmission?

I wouldn't rely on the dash temperature gauge.
If you can get a 'scan gauge' or hook up tech stream to see exactly what the temperature is doing.

Its very possible the radiator had an air lock if coolant hadnt been added incorrectly - theres a few threads on this. In google search "radiator coolant site:www.newhilux.net" or use the search here! box top left of page

Can you find any pink coolant residue around the timing belt / water pump area? (assuming toyota coolant was used and is pink in your area of the world)

That's what I imagine, Toyota wrote it off and sold it (more likely traded it for a new one ;) ) probably because of warranty and the repair cost was not viable.
Agreed, check where the leak is/was and get a good mechanical inspection. Air lock can do strange things.

Thanks guys!
Yes It’s the same engine. Thats sounds very positive, and very very helpful.

It’s the auto. Yeah It’s a small rockdrilling machine, they usually drill with big atlas copco.

Coolant residue is slugg like flakes?

And yes, i got it very cheap, i belive, about 5400 ish aussie dollar. If it dosent cost me a fortune in the end

Yes that is a cheap Hilux, even if you put a crate engine in it is still great value.

Coolant residue is slugg like flakes? What do you mean?

If the vehicle drives ok just keep a close eye on the coolant level regularly and look for leaks.
Make sure there isn't any airlock in the coolant, turn up the heater and park on a hill front up and run the engine for a while to purge the airlock, keep adding coolant to the correct level and watch for leaks. Scantool will give you actual coolant temperature.

The coolant residue will start off looking like spray/splatter residue this in the early stages.
The colour of the below image is a bit dull - usually looks brighter pink
Image

As it progresses it will create a slag (slug like flake) appearance

I found a youtube clip that shows an extreme leak

If you can post a photo of your timing belt cover like the first image or any other area of the engine bay, that may help members like Gipsy to give you further good advice

Sorry guys, I thought I’ve already replied..!
Anyhow, got It home and filled up the coolant, then It was like a jacuzzi in the reservoir, bubbles and instant pressure. Soppuse the pressure should come when the coolant gets hot?

The predikament right now is, ive found a cheap engine with low milage, it fits bolt on.
But i cant take the head off until next weekend... In the end of a 4 year constant building my house and garage, ive worked hard to get the floor in the garage finished so the lux can come in and get comfy

Don’t wanna miss out on the engine but what if it’s just a headgasket? Decisions decisions...

Glad that Shauno and Graham is on youtube [emoji41]
