Can become very difficult if ecu incompatibility issues arrise with new engine so if possible consider a reputable engine reconditioning workshop

I believe there are stock of brand new crate 1KD engines from Toyota if that's in your budget but if you have the skills, time and access to specialized recon workshop you should save a stack of money going down the reconditioning track... sounds like you may have to factor in a new water/coolant pump though

If it seems to run ok find the leak and see how it goes. I have heard the EGR coolers sometimes leak coolant into the induction manifold when they fail.
