How much to replace timing belt?

Postby Surfermax on Mon, 11 Mar 2019 11:36 +0000

Hi guys does anyone know of a good price to replace the timing belt?

I have had various prices (lowest $560 to highest $720) and was wanting to know why there is such a big price disparity?

The timing belt kit itself is around $100, the pain comes from the labour to pull the whole front of the motor off to get to the actual belt and tensioners.

Any make any model that runs a belt is the same pain. Thankfully the wifes Mazda CX-5 runs a chain, never needs replacing.

Any decent mechanic should be able to do a belt, tensioner and cam seal in under an hour on the 1kzte engine. It is literally a piss easy job!

Yes thought that too. Some people on here have said water pump needs to be done too. Is that right as my water pump is still going strong and no issues?

Mechanics on here in the past have recomended it but may have just been drumming up business. I did mine at 150k just in case. Has anyone had their pump go before 300k?
I didnt bother doing the cam seal and still no sign of weeping at 200k.

Yes mine went at about 130,000km. It was the old design though. I'm not sure when the newer two piece design came in but it's same story on the Prado 1kd as well.

The failure wasn't catastrophic, the pink coolant telltale was obvious but it wasn't spewing out. I ended up changing it out at 150,000 when I did the timing belt.
I might be wrong.

Yep in my previous (2009) Hilux I had a bit of weeping from the water pump at around 130km, so got the timing belt done at the same time. I think the total job was around $1k (at Geraldton), which I thought was a bit expensive.
However as we had a courtesy car for the day, the missus went shopping and bought some pearls which cost more!!!
Covered me when I wanted new golf clubs though :D
