hows this for an stupid/funny idea, I am going to run 2 wires from my number plate light to a switch on my dashboard, so i can turn it off if i need too. I don't know why i would need to switch it off but i thought about it and yes there is a reason to switch it off. I can drive with my headlights on but i can turn my rear number plate lights out if i need too.

Other to the naked human eye it wouldnt make any differance. In QLD most plate lights dont work anyway.

And in NSW be prepared to cop a huge fine if a cop sees you with them off.
And a even bigger fine if they magically turn back on.

Wrong! The reflective paint on your numberplate is precisely for that reason

Division 7 Number-plate lights
86 Number-plate lights(cf ALVSR 2015 r 86; 2007 reg Sch 2 cl 99)

(1) At least 1 number-plate light must be fitted to the rear of a vehicle.

(2) When on, the number-plate light or lights must illuminate a number-plate on the rear of the vehicle with white light, so the characters on the number-plate can be read at night 20 metres from the rear of the vehicle.

(3) A number-plate light:

(a) may be combined with another light, and

(b) must not project white light to the rear of the vehicle except by reflection, and

(c) must not obscure the characters on the number-plate, and

(d) must be wired to come on, and stay on, when a parking light, headlight or tail light on the vehicle is on.

(4) Subrules (2) and (3) apply to a number-plate light used to illuminate an auxiliary number-plate issued in respect of a vehicle as if the auxiliary number-plate were a number-plate on the rear of the vehicle.

One way to test leghorn's theory is turn your lights off and drive past a speed camera over the speed limit and see how lucky you are (not that I recommend speeding)

Obviously Leghorn doesn't know about night vision lenses!!

The number plate light is so that people can read the plate. Speed Cameras have a flash for a reason - to basically freeze what would otherwise be a moving image, and part of that image illuminated for the camera to record is the rear number plate. Whether you have the light on the plate is irrelevant.

Test it if you want, turn off your headlights an run a red light with a camera on it. They'll still be able to read the plate.

Do it a few times to make sure .
Maybe up your speed by 10 klms every time just to make sure ,
Then sit back and wait and see what turns up in the mail .

Yep but. A can of a certain clear spray stops cameras taking accurate photos

Until a cop drives up behind you at night and notices your numberplate doesn't shine back light like it should. During the day they just take high resolution photo's

Has anyone noticed a lot of the black and white combo plates seem to. at the right angle/distance the 2 colours blend together or they invert too.

Often wonder if something has been applied to them.
