1GD- FTV Timing Chain replacement issue

1GD- FTV Timing Chain replacement issue

Postby numberplate on Thu, 28 Jun 2018 5:39 +0000

my 2.8 has been booked in for a warranty replacement of the timing chain/s.
some history - a couple of months ago i had noticed a brief slapping / scraping noise at the front of the engine somewhere when the engine cold started. I did not hear this noise while starting the car from inside the cabin but happened to hear it when i started it with door open. 28000 on the speedo at the time.

I didnt think much of it , i presumed it was normal diesel clattering noises. In fact it went in for its service last month and when the Toyota mechanic started it up in the workshop to bring it outside i heard the noise again. Thought nothing of it i presumed if there was an issue the service dept would have told me about it. Fast forward to last week and a Yota in the shopping centre carpark next to me started up and he had no such noise . something suspect here with my engine.

so back to Toyota it goes and they said the timing chains will need to be replaced and it will be a warranty repair no problem. I was a bit miffed that they did not pick up or check on this since the noise was evident at the service!!!!!! They are the freeking specialists after all !!!!

Anyway they will need the car for 4 days while they remove the engine and do the job. I asked if the issue was a common one and just get a blank look. I asked why the engine has to come out to do such a job - blank look. I asked how much money i would have to spend to fix outside warranty - yes another blank look!! WTF . found out since the parts alone are $3000 imagine what 4 days labour cost will be.

excuse the rant but hey if i had not picked up on it i would be many thousands poorer and they probably would have denied any liability becuase i didnt bring an issue to thier attention. not all of us are mechanics

thats what i was initially told , but they couldnt confirm it. seems like there is enough room down there but i dont know.
the diagrams show the engine has 2 chains , dont know if that part cost was for one chain or both ?

So after reading this I also had been noticing a louder noise from my motor when starting up for about 2 seconds on start up in the morning. So i took mine into toyota and left it over night for a cold start test. What do ya know no noise  when it was started in the morning.

Anyway the tech told me that it sounds like the timing chain and that there is a tolerance in which is acceptable and not acceptable for the noise. So they told me to record it myself at home and email it in so they can see whether it needs fixing yet or not.

Mine has only done 40k kms and it also just started to develop the white smoke during a dpf burn too. Apparently there is a massive backorder on the cleaner so still waiting for that to be done too.

If i was you i would NOT be accepting that . Why should you have to wait for something which can be fixed now ?? It can only get worse from here !! there is no way you can record the noise accurately on a mobile phone and identify the noise unless it is very loud . Its too hard to desseminate one noise from another.

If the chain is slapping then they are stretched and or stuffed , or there is a problem with them meshing on the sprockets , simple. The chains are not going to get better by themselves !!!

you might be on a Simpson trip when they let go , then are they going to pay for the recovery costs ?

Well I was with the mechanic when I started it up and he was recording the noise with his phone I guess for evidence to send to Toyota for a warranty repair. But your right about its not going to get any better that's for sure only worse. I started it up this morning and no noise again  I know it was doing this every time in the morning including when I started it up to take to toyota. Once I get a recording then I will wait for there response to see if they are going to fix it or not then go from there.

I'd love to know why they dropped using a belt. Have there been any problems with the belt in the 1KD?

Every vehicle and motorcycle I've owned with a chain has been a PITA when the chain either stretches or the guides wear out.
I might be wrong.

no issues with the belt in the 1KD to my knowledge , but the belt in those only drives the camshaft , the injector pump is driven off gears and the belt takes over from there.

car came back today , job took just under 3 days and the engine needed to come out for repair as they said. One of the sprockets had a fault which meant the chains were not meshing properly and damaged moving parts further along. no other explanation recieved and could not see the bits for myself. apparently they caught it in time before chain broke . Im happy to have it back but would be happier if they had picked up the problem at the ( very ) recent service. they are Toyota specialist mechanics after all.

All parts are currently on order from Japan to replace the whole rotating assemble ie. cam, timing chain, tensioner etc, etc. Going to take 3-4 weeks just to get the parts here apparently, must be coming on steamship from Japan lol

Hi all. This topic is a big concern were I work, we ordered 30 units hilux 2GD 2016 model and now we ordered 40 units 2017 model, but we are locate outside the city in heavy sand mini so we don’t have warranty package we repair ourselves, 3 of them they started rattling at 130k km, and one of them at 70k km, I even order a chain kit but we don’t have any repairing manual since this model is still new, can someone indicate a link or site were we can get a workshop repair manual?

Hi. Is there a certainty that if we change the timing chain kit the noise will go away? Or we have to remove the engine in order to see the low sprocket and balancing shaft?

I'm not sure about the repair details mate but there is a Toyota servicing website which you can look at. you subscribe for a cost of $16AUD per day and then download all the repair sheets

mate you have every right to lose your cool. some dealers can be real turds , and i dont know why....the noise in my car came back again , and i had continuing DPF problems , 2 breakdowns and numerous other issues by 50k . full dealer service history by the way. so i complained to head office and they replaced my car for free.
