My SR 2018 AUTO dual cab 4x4

Postby grunf on Wed, 16 May 2018 6:48 +0000

Hi all respected members,

First post here, so bare with me please :D

After long research (thinking about Ranger, Amarok and D-Max) and my father in law giving me shi*ts every time we go out camping etc about how good is his toyota's compared to my cars I happened to be driving at the time I have decided to have a second look at Hilux SR 2018.

I do not need climate control and better looking tub with sports bar or carpet and GPS in the car or 18" wheels, more or less everything is the same between SR5 and SR.

Car will be used as every day vehicle and my hunting/camping rig.

I will probably buy an SR tomorrow morning - brand new 2018 auto, white 4x4, dual cab.

I managed the get this deal today:

SR, white, dual cab, auto, 4x4 for $42,500 drive away (capped service for 3 years).

or with this accessories included:

- Snorkle
- Towbar
- Redarc TowPro electric brake controller
- Premium Steel Bullbar with spotlights (winch compatible)
- Tub liner
- Soft toneu cover (until I decide which canopy to buy - please suggest)
- Dust seal kit
- TRD bash plate
- Tinted windows
- Matts
for $48,700 all up.

Would this be OK deal or not?

Looks a good deal to me, and you could calculate the value of the extras by getting comparable prices from ARB or another supplier. Can't help you with the canopy selection - I have a custom frame and soft canopy on my flat tray.
Cheers- enjoy the new toy!

Thanks mate,

I signed the contract today, expecting the car next Friday.
Already booked in for tyre swap on the same day. Going with BFG AT KO2 285/70 R17 LT.

At the moment SR has factory 265/65 R17 on factory steel rims 17x7.5 .

The tyre shop is adamant that I will not have any issues running bigger 285/70 tyre size. That is respectable and well regarded shop, I have been their customer for years. I mentioned how some people on this forum have concerns about that size but they said they are staking their reputation on it!

We'll see how I go.
:D

Could be their famous last words haha

Congrats and welcome to the toyota family.

So don’t know what options you went buddy but my two suggestions from your list.

This is my opinion of course.

The snorkel don’t go genuine it looks ugly in my opinion doesn’t follow the lines of the car (you listening toyota it looks like the worst afterthought ever). Safari looks right on the Ute, heck most manufacturers got the style so much better then toyota did.

The TRD bash plate. TRD should be embarrassed of having their name on it. It’s paper thin and bolts over the original on flimsy little brackets. You said pig chasing first pig or roo it will buckle and break. Spend your money on a proper replacement UVP.

As for canopy I’m an ARB addict it’s rare to see on the road but they do make the Ascent canopy for the SR also. Expensive yes but worth it in my opinion.

And as for bar. If your a country bloke looking for 5 posta. Talk to Tuff in Toowoomba. There bars are amazing. Hit way too many Roos in my past utes never failed. 4WD bar ARB Summit all the way. They are rock solid.

Thats some great info mate, appreciate that and thank you for the welcome.

To cut the long story short, I had option choosing between a set of driving lights and TRD bash plate (part of a deal we reached).
Not knowing or even seeing one in real life I choose TRD bash plate, but I will change it tomorrow back to the set of driving lights. - Thank you again.

Hey mate, welcome.
Strongly suggest to not get the soft tonneau cover if you're going to get a canopy.
The Toyota cover (even SR) clips to alloy rails that need to be drilled/pop riveted to tub, so when replaced with a canopy you'll have a few extra ugly holes!
As above I also have the ARB acsent canopy, very happy with it.

Thanks for info and welcoming me gents :D

I won't be getting canopy in a hurry. Have to wait for my valet to recover first lol
Those holes will be inside of tub and/or covered by canopy eventually so I am not overly concerned about them, but would definitely need cover until I get the canopy.

Does anyone knows anything about this mob:
http://unibee4x4.com.au/uniute-series-3 ... t-windows/
seems to be a bit cheaper than the rest.

I just drilled / ground out the 30 odd rivets to de-tonneau my sr5 a couple of days ago. Fitting a canopy (genuine one).

I'm not too precious about things like the former rivet holes on the inside of the tub rail. Just chucked a bit of primer on them.

Gents does anyone know how good are these driving lights which Toyota sells as an accessory?
I’m getting them as a pat of the deal so just wondering are they any good.

On my current 4x4 I have a set of Lightforce Genesis LED’s and love them. I suspect these Toyota ones wont come even close

Have not had them.
Website says they are hella rallye 3003.
Sounds like it’s a new model.
Had rallye 4000s and 2000s in the past and nothing wrong with either light for their money. so I guess they won’t be too bad.
Hella is a good brand. Won’t compare to the genesis though up close. but still as a throw in they are certainly better then nothing.
Got a good deep dish looking at pics. which means more distance which is what you want in a well designed light. (Fyrlyt, light force xgt, hella 4000s, power beam spot lights etc)all have great long distance throw because of the deep reflector design. Something LED try to achieve by simply adding more and more LEDs.

Thank you.

I asked them to install one spread and one pencil type light. Will be interesting to see how they perform.

Yes but on the 'SR' you can see the tonneau rivets from the outside under the top lip of the J-tub.

I chickened out  after reading all comments about even slightly bigger tyres rubbing when installed without a lift kit.
Called the tyre shop and got them to deliver 265/65 R17 BFG's instead of 285/75 R17 they suggested.
Because car gets picked up next Friday, booked in next day (Saturday) to fit the tyres and then on Sunday I'm going away I could not afford to be stuck on Saturday with tyres that don't fit and not have enough time to order/wait for another set.

265/70 R17 will fit by just removing the front mud flaps.
My favourite mod so far.... until I do a 2" lift and 255/85 R16 :D

D-day tomorrow :)

Picking up the car in the arvo.

Other than ARB canopy, can someone recommend a canopy for SR which look ok and is not going to break my budget?

I have googled and searched here, but nothing caught my eye :|
