2003 RZN149R altenator wiring diagram

Alternator stopped charging yesterday, battery light stays on.

thought ide look at the diagram first look for fuses etc to check before I pull it out.

Any one know where I could download it?

Is there a sticker on the alternator with a pin configuration? if so what are the 2 or 3 pin designations?
"L" "I" and "S" (light, ignition and sense) are the common ones on the older models but some manufacturers were introducing some forms of computer confusion round about then and they will have similar looking plugs but very different lettering.

If yours has the above, pull the plug and the light should go off, with a test light check for 12 volts at "I" & "S" with the ignition turned on and also 12 volts at the output battery terminal, if it has all of these the alternator will be faulty.

If it has any other pin designations other than above don't do anything, you could turn a very simple problem into a major expense. Either just swap out the alternator if it has big mileage on it or has seen lots of mud and see if it works or get it looked at by an auto sparky.

ive read the FAQ, it said I can post pictures but doesn't tell me how?

Ive got photo of the rear cant see a sticker. sticker on the side is damaged but says TOYOTA & DENSO, cant read the numbers.

I can see 3 wires coming out of the plug. cant get a grip on it though, very tight squeeze. actually looks like I have to remove bottom radiator pipe to get the alt out. ouch.

brake light is also on, ive checked both hand brake and reservoir switches, theyre not the cause. ide really like a diagram

It has big mileage, 300K km, never any mud or water, its 2WD. im thinking about rebuilding it, Amaya has reg, diodes for less than $200, or I can get a 2nd hand genuine for $150

Depending what model denso alternator it is it may be a waste of time trying to rebuild it. If it has solid housings then it might be viable to rebuild depending on how badly burned the sliprings are if brush wear is the cause, if they have enough meat on you will need to get it machined for the alternator to be reliable and not start to bounce the brushes at higher speeds and cause burning and early destruction.

If it is one that looks like a birdcage then will need new sliprings and that's sort of a specialised procedure.

At 300k id also be worried about metal fatigue in the windings if it is a diesel engine, hammering out the shaft could break the field winding or at least shorten whats left of its life.

Second hand is an option but look at it like this, last week you had a second hand one that was working, its always a gamble.

My advice would be to go for a new unit, even a new after market one should in theory be better than a rebuilt 300 plus km unit.

By the way if your brake warning light is on, this is normal if the alternator stops charging, it is a bulb test function that is mandatory in many countries.

Follow up;

not diesel Martyn, its 3RZ-FE petrol 2wd.

Thanks for the feedback re warning lights etc, sorry didn't follow you advice exactly, its just the way things worked out

Pulled ALT out, the back cover and brush regulator were removed easily. the brushes were completely worn down, one a bit burnt. Im a trained Elec Fitter Mechanic so ive done a few before.

I then put in a cheap used genuine ALT ide found. all good except noticed bottom crank pulley floating loose on harmonic balancer. put it all back together and ordered a new genuine HB from AMAYAMA TRADING, cheaper than local non genuine. also ordered two genuine Toyota (Denso) brush kits for the two alternators I now have. $14.50 each, that's the holder inc the brushes and springs.

So now my original ALT is back in with new brushes and resurfaced slip rings, ditto the spare unit as well although the slip rings weren't burnt on that one. bearings in both ok. Put in the new HB at same time. that annoying little rattle and squeal when I start the engine now gone.

So now ive got a good spare Denso altenator with new brushes, if anyone wants it ill sell it.

Thanks for coming back and following up, not many people do, good outcome, however the bearings in it at those km will be running on memory so I wouldn't be parting with your spare.

Very lucky find with the balancer, that could have got really messy.
