Ranga good to hear you may rebuild the engine and I understand your need for wheels, if you do rebuild you could even sell it to pay for the swap later. It would give you lots of knowledge about the inner workings of a diesel engine and who knows there could be a few race parts to build a bullet proof powerplant.

Check which pistons were put in to make sure they are the latest!

At 90k a failed injector sounds like an insurance job due to bad fuel..... ;)

True but I think he has pre filter so if it was contamination it would be evident in the filtration system.

As an engineer I always say, if in doubt look for the obvious first. I'm sure ranga would have done that. ;)

Not wanting to dance on a dead engines grave - I would hate this to happen to anyone and am really sorry to see yours go FR

The most obvious things that go wrong is after we modify things, take things off, bolt things on and crank them up sometimes beyound manufacturers calculated safe operation range.
D4D Pistons are known to hole when certain manufacturers fuel parameters are exceeded

Ranga, after some period of trial and checking egt's I found that if you lug up a hill the temps go up rapidly and simply changing down reduces temps very quickly. Highest I've seen are 425c and this is with an auto in OD 4th, when the OD and torque converter lockup are over ridden the temps quickly/immediately reduce to 250c at 100kph ;) Probably due to increased revs/ airflow/turbo boost, so changing down is worthwhile especially when towing. Normally I tow in 3rd (4 speed auto) and especially before a big hill. Just adds more to the idea that towing in top gear is not good for your donk. I suspect driving uphill in a manual in 5th gear would produce similar results, hence change down a gear or two if you want to keep it cool. Just my 2 cents ;)

And for those with autos and fitted torque converter locking, take care when towing! Especially uphill. ;)

Hey mate, that's been a epic build!! It's has come up absolutely fantastic! Ranga, im in the currently looking at picking up some tires but I'm tossing up between the trail grapplers and another brand. I'm just wondering how you've found the grapplers and if you'd go them again?

Thanks for any info mate!

Quick update, got my lux back with a fresh motor. Forgot about the unichip delete module as my unichip currently get a stock turbo map put back on it and isnt in the car. So i spent most of today huntimg for a airflow meter fault. Got that sorted and now i have a p0046 error and limp mode. The stock turbo is a second hand job so the solinoid may be stuffed. Ran out of daylight this arvo but im going to have another play with it tomorrow and see if i can sort it out. Think it may have something to do with the limiting grub screw on the actuator arm as its wound all the way out. The solinoid runs through its motions how it should and it only limp modes when its loaded up and makimg boost. Getting real tired of this bloody car

So had another play this morning and got the toyota diagnostic tree off a mate. My stepper motor is running as it should but is hitting the bottom stopper bolt bracket at full down. If i wind the bolt up to limit travel it faults strightbaway but wound right out it only faults when i get up it. Ir also hit 20psi just before it limp moded. Its stock turbo stock ecu atm so theres something off there. If i drive easy it goes ok atm and i need it for tomorrow so thatll do for now. I think i need to clock my turbo compressor housing toward the block a bit so the arm can run its full range and be stopped by the bolt. Anyone know which way the stopper goes for max boost? Is it up for boost down for no boost?

Thought id update this again, turns out my p046 code had nothing to do with the turbo or stepper motor, found the vac line to my map filter was barely on. It came off completely and lost all power. Found it put it back on and fixed all my issues. Drove fine for about 600km then friday arvo started chugging white smoke. Only when warm. Serviced it this werkend and checked the sump pickup. It was spotless. Disconnected my unichip again and checked my injector values. Cylinder 1 is at -3.3 cold and comes back to -2.6 warm. So this week ill get a new set of injectors in the c**t. Seriously considering selling the pos after this bloody sick of it.

Well my pos lemon hilux has f$@#&% out again, same issue as 3 weeks ago. No rail pressure and same deal as last time I'm 500+km from home. Put a new fuel pump in a few weeks ago it's now clocked just over 1000kms on the new pump and died. I'm done this piece of shit is getting parted out and scraped and I'm going to buy a new Triton.
