That sucks considering you aren't even running extreme power through it. Wonder if it was a crook injector that did the damage?

Id say definetly crook injector. Sucks but shit happens. Ill have to scrape some money together and get a new one . I know 2 guys with second hand engines i can get so ill make some calls tommorrow and sort something out. Ill pull the turbo off and apart next week and see what happened to it as well

It could have been the turbo sending a stray fin into cylinder 3?

Pretty unlikely anything off the turbo would have to get past the front mount intercooler

The heads still on it not sure if I'll bother pulling it off. Found a guy thatll sell me a recon motor for 5k and he will install it. Car it came out of got a bit of water in it, they put a brand newy in that car under insurance and the bloke rebuilt the other one. Had 60k kms on it

Ranger. Just a little tip for your trailer so u don't have to keep the car hooked up while camp is set up. With a set of caravan corner stabilisers u can set up easy and still use the car.here is a link to which I'm referring to. http://www.alko.com.au/vehicle-technolo ... -steadies/ . Chespest in townsville was from RTM aka road tech marine.

You can't complain about $5k for that. I guess the only thing you could even consider is seeing how much he will let the engine go for if you install it yourself. But I guess it's not worth the hassle most of the time.

But good luck, hopefully she's up and running after winter.

Didn't think I'd ever hear you say that Ranga.

I know there could be other limiting factors like time and transport, but if these don't come into it buy a book and have a go, it is only an engine.

The engine your looking at buying, what went into it? And will it work when it is fitted, I assume it hasn't been tested.

Devil you know is better.........

Either way, good luck.

I think I'd rather buy a low k engine from a wrecker than buy one thats been apart, especially for 5k! I know the wrecker near me usually has loads of them.

Ranga, do you think the egt temps contributed/caused the detonation? After reading the threads on egt and pyrometer it seems most folks report 500s to be safe temps. I haven't seen over 420 but haven't loaded the truck yet, towing the van soon so will keep you posted.

I sure would like to dismantle the engine if it were me if only to see what happened/why. The rebuild would be a good experience for you, then you could add another string to your knowledge bow ;) can't be too hard with your experience/expertise. :) Otherwise the broken one is just an anchor but the opportunity could be a good experience.

I second martynvella on that.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Cheers for the replys guys, rang a few wreckers today and theyre all areound 6.5k with an exchange and only come with a tiny bit of warranty (10kkms or 3 months) the one in town has new pistons and bearings amd a full gasket kit put through it. Hasnt been run but the bloke is positive itll be fine ( he has done a fair few of them now). And he will instal it which saves me buying am engine crane, a heap of knuckle skin and stress and he will pick it up and drop it off. Seems like a winner to me.
Ill give old mate a hand and pull mine down once its out to see exactly what happened, i probably could just rebuild mine (ive done a few petrol motors before) but its my only transport so i need it going, its to far to walk to the pub
I dont think egts where a contributing factor its never got real hot and while the consensus on here seems to be below 500 my neighbour has been towing a dual axle work trailer well over 2 tons for the whole life of his lux and flogging the arse put of it and hasnt had issues. Id say his is well over 500 degrees fpr long stints up the hills around here. I pretty confident mine was just from a dead injector leaking and melting a hole in a piston
