The Total Chaos ones I used on my last rig gave me the range of adjustment to move them further from the firewall, I figured they were all like that (except the fixed setting versions).
if the wheel is moved forward using the upper control arm, as distinct from using the lower arm, the upper ball joint is moved forward, which will reduce castor, although, as you say, it will increase clearance.
Any clearance change, increase or decrease, made by moving the top ball joint a given amount will be very small,simply because the top ball is much further from the spindle than the bottom ball.
The way to chase increased clearance is by moving the bottom ball forward, and with standard bushes, this has it limits before you run into alignment tradeoffs.
Or just suck it up and reach for the grinder
