G'day, been a member on here for a while now and finally decided to do a build thread, so here goes..

2006 Dual Cab diesel manual SR in white. Purchased with reasonably high k's but well looked after. have had it since 07/2011.

how she came, stock as a rock, optioned with ABS.
Image
Image

fitted some small oval lights to bar. These looked alright, but were completely useless as they bounced all over the place
Image
So I fitted some more functional aftermarket fog lights to the factory position

Next up was an SR5 sports bar, a 4wd supplies snorkel and a genuine nudge bar with a set of IPF 900's on it

Then I fitted a 2011 model SR5 headunit and painted the dash like the SR5
Image
HID kit for the spotlights
Image
Cooper ST/MAXX 245/75R16 tyres fitted and a Reverse light. Also removed those useless side steps
Image
Image

That pretty much brings us up to this week where after getting jealous of the fact that a base pack rodeo gets a glove box light and my lux doesn't, add a bit of boredom and $5.00 and I fitted a couple of commdore lights to the centre console and glove box
Image
Image
Image
i've done lots of other little things like installing a dash dimmer, rear seat mod, uhf, seat belt and key reminder's removed etc..

On a side note, this is what my maintenance free fuel filter looked like when i pulled it out
Image
and the gunk in the water catch
Image

thanks to everyone on this website, it has been a very valuable source of knowledge!!

Nice job mate!

Looking at doing the same as you with the rims/tyre combo. 245/75 Muddies on the standard rims.
Do they go alright?

Cheers mate

Yeah they are pretty good. I've had them on sand, dirt and a little bit of mud with no problems.

howd you go installing the roll bar? i have a 2012 SR and wouldnt mind buying a roll bar, maybe painting it black and installing it. relatively easy to do?

Yeah fairly easy. Start off by getting it in the right position relative to the window protector. The bar will naturally lean towards the car at the top because its a 2 piece setup, so take the measurement from the bottom. Mark those front holes, drill and secure. Then stick a couple of ratchet straps on the rear part of the bar to the tailgate and pre load it up to get it sitting straight. That's for the older style bar. The my12 bar might be differnt.

Not having a go at you but is it normal practice to fit a 245 on a 6" rim? Cooper and MT websites state a 245 should be fitted to a 6.5' - 8' rim.Had any problems at low pressure?

Yes I realised this, and tyrepower assured me they've had no problems. In regards to low pressures, because of the firm sidewalls on the st maxx, you'd have to drop pressure seriously low to make a difference. I run them at 39psi. Safely had them at just under 30psi.

Well time for a quick update..

For the last few months I've been running the pedders upgrade springs in the front on the stock struts, just to level the ute out with the back. Sits nicely now. Rides a little firmer but that's alright. It could really so with some heavier duty, longer struts though.

Also, I got the hilux stuck for the first time with the new tyres a couple of months back..I've got a great excuse though-the dodgy tyre gauge at the servo decided that instead of putting 40psi in it would put 60psi.

Image

I've also added a dual battery kit and another power socket in the back of the centre console. The dual batt was a budget build. Got the electronic isolator for free. Made up the tray from steel with my neighbour(cheers!). Decided just to make the tray to suit a commodore sized battery to lessen the chance of cracking the guard. I'm not using a fridge or anything serious off of it so dont need a deep cycle. Plus the battery costs only $80 ;)
Oh and I added some led light striping throughout the tub for camping/hunting. I'll put some photos up when I take them haha

Cheers

Re: mitch_893's 2006 Hilux build update 11/13

Postby mitch_893 on Sun, 24 Nov 2013 6:59 +0000

been a while since i updated the build.
few changes here and there!

All started when I had a car accident which meant the hilux required a new front end.
Image
So thought why not upgrade and put a colour coded bumper and grill on. Insurance company panel beaters actually painted the grill for me without asking. would've preferred the mesh parts to be left unpainted but oh well...
Image
Then came the MCC Falcon Winch bar. Great guy to deal with at the mcc store. Spent quite a while adjusting the bar with shims to get it sitting pretty good. I need to sort out and issue with it though...seems to shake a fair bit on the wings on rough roads. you can actually hear it hitting the guards. The spotlights also bounce a bit. on the nudge bar they didn't move at all, so not sure if this is a characteristic of all bullbars or just this one??
Image
Image
Image

Then I installed a set of Utemart flares in sr5 size. Now I fit vehicle accessories weekly at my job, and I've got to say, these were one of the worst things I've ever fitted. The fiddly rubber seals should come pre attached to he flare. The alcohol rubs don't clean the surfaces well enough. The double sided tape wont stick to much. One of the front ones sticks out too much meaning the tape has no chance of touching the guard. But anyway, they are on, they look alright, i just need to re glue some of the seals on.
Image
Image

Right so that brings me up to this weekend where i finally got around to pulling the intake manifold off to clean it out and also replace the injector washers/seats. cylinder 1 was well and truly leaking, 2 was on its way out and 3 and 4 both had the newer style washers in place so looked great. I checked my oil pickup a few weeks ago because i suspected leaking washers, but it was spotless.

G'day Mitch,

Old post I know, but fancy fitting my utemart flares to my SR (at a price obviously)? I can bring the truck to you.

If not, then some good advice on how to fit them would be great.

g'day buddy,

as i said in the post, these were one of the worst things i have had to fit. really wouldn't want to go through it again.
you really need to scrub and prep the flares and the guards.maybe with contact cleaner and then a heat gun (contact cleaner tends to rapidly cool things down, resulting in moisture). take your time and stick the seals onto the flare. trail fit on the ute. i should've been more eagle eyed and noticed that on one of the front flares, right at the front tip, there is a little 'knob' that sticks out. mine was too long (no pun intended hehe), and means that the seal doesn't touch the guard. tried filing it whilst on the ute but no good. have not bothered to fix it. most important part is around the fuel filler. it didn't want to stick at all. ended up having to glue it on there, luckily the super-glue didn't eat the paint too badly!.

if you need a hand i am happy to come and help, but i certainly wouldn't want the responsibility of doing it to someone else's car. working full time, and doing it in winter, i actually had to do 2 flares a night. might even be worth mounting the seal to the flare first, and leaving it to set for a day.

It's all been a bit of a long drawn out exercise that one.
The HKS was fitted and dyno tuned by a well renowned tuner in Victoria over 12 months ago, however they completely tuned it wrong(there's a difference between an 05 model and 08 model tune). I'm not going to name and shame them though. Not fair on them.
Matt at just autos came to the rescue doing a remote tune for me which drove much better.
I fitted the gturbo a few months ago and once again Matt sorted out another remote tune for me. So really it still needs to go on a dyno, ideally just autos dyno, but that's a fair drive from vic just for that haha

The HKS fit and 'tune' was about 2k and the turbo was around 2400
