Second diesel fuel filter

I am thinking of installing a diesel care secondary filter kit as well but struggling to see what costs $300. I know it could save me thousands but you can buy the filter on its own for about $80, a few hoses and clamps $20, so I can't see that bracket being worth $200. My father in law bought the bits and made a bracket for his Prado for under $100. Just saying.

After nearly 9 years of having a water alarm system fitted to my previous ute (Nissan D40) and having been saved on three occasions when I took on water contaminated fuel I sought advice from my local Toyota dealer what they would recommend for my new Hilux. Interestingly, they didn't go for a second filter but rather recommended the same system that I'd have fitted to my D40.......the Australian designed and built Water Watch. If it serves me as well as the older model I had in my D40 then I will be one happy camper.
You can read more about Water Watch here: http://www.waterindiesel.com.au/water-watch-system/

Worth a look at the Donaldson p902976 at around $115, just as good as the rest but you need to make a bracket, some fit them without a bracket. ;)

Wow just checked ebay $93 ;) and the bracket is included

Regardless of the filter, I change oil every 5k and fuel every 10k.

Are you guys with two filters fitted changing both when usual intervals are up. Looking at fitting pre filter with 30m and then just the normal factory filter and was just wondering what others are doing.

I do my secondary every 10k and my factory one every second time I do the secondary so they both get done every 20k.

I change the factory one at one service and my pre filter at the next if the factory is dirty I change both
for the cost of a filter it is not that much trouble

Guys... as I hear it, Toyota mechanics only replace the oem fuel filter when the light comes on and not as the owner manual says... maybe it is over-servicing to replace them too often? My oem filter has 35ks up and the pre-filter still runs like chardonnay ;) No crap in the bowl yet and no lights but I do check every time I use the vehicle.

Edit: suggest you carry a spare oem for when the light does come on ;)

No such thing as over servicing in my book when it comes to these bloody common rails! And your rite, toyota only replace the oem one if something goes wrong. They consider it a lifetime filter! Just like the drive train oils, lifetime! Bugger that!

TOYZ, as an aircraft engineer I totally agree there is no such thing as over-servicing... but if you are paying for the parts I guess some reasonable informed consent may be in order. If I was given the parts at someone else's cost I would change them out at 10-20ks but alas I pay for my parts. :(

I fitted a Fuel Manager pre filter behind the grill on the drivers side, because I've got no room near the dual battery and associated bits I've added in that area.

I also wanted to be able to see the bowl easily and also not have to struggle getting the oil filter off.

Works well for me.

Just a few facts to add to the discussion:
1. Bailey's Diesel had the factory filter independently tested, and the result says 8-10 micron.
2. The factory injector openings are 3-5 micron
3. Bailey's sell the cheapest FM100 kit in 2 micron
4. There's no issue running a 2 micron filter
5. Toyota says to change fuel filter every 40k

fwiw, I change 1 filter every 10k, so no filter is older than 20k.

Yes I know the Toyota manual says change at 40k but reports from many here say they do not change as a regular item in practice. Dealerships even tell you they don't unless you get a warning light.

Just reporting what many have said here and elsewhere.

when our model (05-15) first came out, the book said only change filter if the light came on, Toyota updated the instructions some years later to state 40k.

Yes mate but I stand by the reports that Toyota dealerships do not change them at 40k even the later models.
