Not sure what most people are doing. Perhaps most people wouldnt be driving thru anything over 500mm.

Not to be confused with the fuel neck filler breather which is just for equalisation during filling and can not breathe when the filler cap is on.
Inside is a semi-one way valve. This valve pictured is biased to more freely allow air flow IN to the tank. The bias doesnt make sense until you think about fuel temperature and rapid contraction from water crossing.
Have heard they can get clogged with dust, moisture, mud etc causing the tank to partially collapse
