200k service

Postby kingydbird on Thu, 12 Mar 2015 7:08 +0000

G'day guys,

I have been going to a really reputable mechanic for a few years but frankly I am not sure if I am getting charged too much. I have gotten quotes from other places and some are about the same and some are cheaper.
I just got a quote for a 200k service for my D4D and they are wanting $900. Is this normal?

It might be normal for some but it's just plain robbery. It takes me about 2 hours and under $200 in material - all oils and filters.

Depends on whether they're doing valve clearances/tappets or not.

Rang up another bloke, who is quite well respected as well. He said $450-$550. I told him that the 1st guy wanted $900 and he said "I have no idea where he got that number from." Looks like I'm changing mechanics...

Good Idea, you'll be  Nobody checks valve clearance unless specifically asked and you agree to the fine

It's a bit hard to tell unless you show us an itemized quote. The first mechanic maybe a lot thorough, Its easy for others to say its too much I can do it cheaper without seeing what's actually being done., just don't go on price alone you really need to know exactly what he is quoting for. Then make a decision, if he has been great in the past its worth asking first rather than just dump him..Tell him his quote seems high ,if he doesn't want to go over it with you. Walk..

I was quoted 830 from a dealer for the 80k service including the valve clearance check and installing a new set of injector seats and seals while their in there. Said the seats and seals only add about half an hour to the job.
