Peeling Steering Wheel

Postby Hostile1 on Fri, 27 Feb 2015 2:20 +0000

I have an early 2013 Hilux and after 24,000klms the steering wheel is starting to peel.

Normal everyday driving, I don't use chemicals to clean interior and I don't use chemicals at work that would be on my hands.

Has this happened to anyone else and do you think it is a warranty issue.

Thanks.

I had the dame problem with my AU Falcon, the foam come away from the internal metal rod, went to Ford, and they said forget it, interior part, high usage part, no warranty.

The best they would/could do is inject glue into it with a needle and sygrine, and glue it back internally.

Unless Toyota are nice, I would highly doubt you will get warranty

Skrewdriver that's exactly what i would have thought, but considering boxhead is an employee of a toyota dealership, and would see warranty jobs day in day out, i think he would have a fair idea of what will be covered. good for me cos i have a 2013 hilux and my steering wheel started peeling 6 months ago, i put a cover on it and left it at that. but now that i know it'll be covered, i'll be heading in for my new steering wheel!

We had the same issue with our Holden Colorado just before the warranty rang out. Holden said pretty much the same thing, that it was a high usage part and was abused (wtf?)
Obviously your relationship with your dealer plays a part, but I daresay it the odds are against you

We asked the same thing, the response we got was "Rough hands, wedding rings and long fingernails can damage the steering wheel"

This is why I use a half wood steering wheel in my Hilux - very durable and will likely never give me problems

Had mine replaced at Newcastle Toyota, colour wasn't even close so they put my old one back on, they got another in for me colour still not exact match but it was the last attempt at fixing for me so I accepted it, the colour is out but not to much.

Mine is starting to show signs o0f wear after 150000klms. Anyone know of an aftermarket one? Is even possible with airbag and controls etc?

I had this issue at 20,000km, Sent it in and they replaced in 1hr,

Was more of a melting rather than peeling though?

Toyota mechanic whom has apparently worked there for 8-9 year had never seen it happen either :? (what croc)

i remember from my skyline days that you can send your stock wheel off to momo and theyll re upholster it all fancy like, not sure if they still do it and i think it was faitly expensive but it might be worth looking into
