Transfer case leak?

Awesome! i just did my rear flange diff seal 4 weeks ago, so this shouldnt be any harder, thanks for the info guys. Much appreciated, time to get oily

I have a bloody front drive shaft T-Case leak too now... I give it a hard time last couple of weekends and has developed a nice big leak I topped it up early in the week with about 500ml fluid!!!!,at least the underside of the truck wont ever rust........
parts to be ordered today.....
was it 2 seals and a nut guys or just 1?

I havent had time to do it yet im going into toyota today, but pretty sure its just one seal and the nut

It's two seals, one goes inside the flange and the other in the transfer case housung

i did this today,Unless you have a hoist and you have 3 blokes on it its not a 30min job.More like an hour or so..

Its one seal,unless you cracking the transfer case for the main case gasket.
Ill post the toyota Part Number shortly.. $27..

Drain fluid first or you'll make a mess

you need hd 14mm,17mm spanners for the drive shaft bolts you dont need to completly remove the drive shaft from the diff,just knock 3 bolts(with the nut on) through the flange and lever it out of the way , small tapered chisel for the nut tab,30mm socket with breaker bar put it in Low range 4wd to undo it or use ratle gun,slide flange off shaft(note position or the drive shaft wont lineup with the bolt holes when resembling or you'll need to lift a front wheel to spin to line up) ,the seal is tight in there,pop it out with a screw driver,and flick fluid all over you face.
Lubricate new seal with oil tap in with large socket around 1mm bellow casing face,clean flange journal,slide back on tension Nut and knock tab back in and lock up.refit drive shaft,lubricate unis.
refill transfer case fluid,fit bash plates....
have a beer...

There is a small seal on the inside of the flange it self which for the $5 was worth changing.

Also you could of put your transfer case into neutral after you fitted the flange to save lifting the car and rotating tyres.

yep That was my plan too,but I couldn't engage neutral so Had to lift a wheel...

for anyone looking at this job a couple of tips as I've just done this on an LN series, same setup but access is much worse due to crossmember in the way directly under the t-case.

14mm nuts were uber tight, broke a 1/2" uni joint with the rattle gun, ended up heating them which made job much easier. Maybe someone had use loctite?

18v Dewalt impact wrench took care of the large 30mm nut after I destaked it but a few people reckon there's no need to destake if you use a ratttler.

Yoke was rust welded to the companion flange, heat and penetrating oil didnt work but hammering either side did the job in the end.

If you have trouble compressing the prop shaft you may need to remove the grease zerk on the front end but beware all the grease will be squeezed out the zerk hole as you shorten the shaft

Companion flange looked like it would need a gear puller to loosen but you can get access from the rear of the transfer case to give it a hurry along with a decent weight bar.

Some manuals say to drive a self tapper into the seal and grab that to release, didnt work for me, the screw pulled out and it'd be very easy to scratch up the seal housing. I grabbed a seal picker for $10 in the end which worked well.

Reseating the seal you can use 50 mm pvc pipe to drive it in.

Local toyota dealer reckons they never replace the small outer seals but for $7 why not?

This job took way too long as the vehicle had done a lot of beach work, my inexperience and poor access of the LN series.

If our later model Hilux ever needs doing I reckon I could do it in an hour tops.

Hi all, does anyone have the part numbers on-hand for this job to suit a 2006 'Lux? Been told my transfer case flange is leaking.

I've got 90311-41012 for the front output seal but not sure on the secondary seal or nut.

EDIT: think I found them. Can anyone confirm for me?

Just following up on this. The below part numbers were fine for my 2006 'Lux:

• 90311-41012 or 90311-41010 (seal that usually needs replacing, this p/n is for vehicles up to 6/2008)
• 90312-23001 (inner seal, usually doesn't need replacing)
• 90179-22016 (nut)

However, for my vehicle, I had the seal replaced with an aftermarket one (for free to make up for a previous mechanical error) about two months before the seal leaked again. It turns out that my transfer case flange was worn, and was also still on the original flange. Apparently, a revised flange that's a bit more resilient came out in the years after 2006.

New genuine flange and seals on the vehicle now so we'll see how we go...

I know this is an old thread but can anyone tell me what oil toyota recommend for the transfer case. Also the nut that holds the flange on does it need to be tentioned or can it just be done up FT? thanks

Everything should be torqued but loctite and FT will be fine[emoji6] 80/90 gear oil is all ya need.

It's here on the forum somewhere. Just can't find it right now.

I've done my front output seal 3 times now... once was my own mistake dislodging the seal spring. From memory the main nut is 118nm. Cant remember the prop shaft bolts.

No worries, on other models like the 4-runner, the prop shaft bolts/nuts are 88nm. This here might help you find further info or elsewhere on the web if this link is no longer active:

I replaced the seal today, and it still leaks now, its the transfer case front seal, im wondering if the spring tension in the seal might be rubbish, I did buy the genuine seal btw......any suggestions
