rattle on light load/acceleration

Postby sammysau on Tue, 03 Jun 2014 5:38 +0000

Hey all,

Okay... My 2006 Hilux has rattled pretty well..... 3L diesel...

- The old death rattle on cold is good, but it goes once warm.
- The clutch/thrust bearing was a nice rattle when the clutch was not engaged. Still unsure how that works, but replacement clutch fixed that thank god.

but now I have a brand new rattle, the rattle is on light acceleration.. and very annoying. If I plant the foot, the rattle stops. It is especially annoying traveling at 80 or 100km/h..... I plant the foot and it goes... release... plant foot.. release. If I stick on 100km/h, it is pretty loud.

.... Yes, my injectors are out a bit but I don't blame them (even though they should be replaced).

But I am wondering whether it is more something with the EGR or similar system... or PCV positive crank whatever. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try disconnecting the rod between the EGR actuation and valve. It will throw a code if you flog it, but just drive it around the block at the light loads and see if that helps.
Might be as simple as a clean for the EGR + intake...

Thanks BDG, I will give that a try and let you know. I did have a look down at the intake valve when I had the intercooler off a while back and it seemed fairly clean... not to say it isn't dirty as hell further down!

The soot doesn't normally start until the elbow which is where the exhaust gas enters.

Hi,

Yep the soot, it was fairly clean but I didn't inspect down past the elbow.

BDG - I disconnected the rod at idle - it threw a flag straight up. I took it for a light drive, no difference. I cleared the code.. took it for another drive... and possibly a slight difference!? (or my imagination), but still there.

I just don't think it is the injectors, I think it has something to do with the EGR or such.... I'm thinking that because under heavy acceleration it is smooth/fine... but light acceleration it is noisy as hell sometimes!!!

I'll keep tinkering... might remove all the EGR assembly at some stage... I got half way through doing that last time but gave up.

Mine does it also Ben. BP ultimate diesel and 2 stroke lube helps.

G'day,

I tried diesel injector cleaner in a tank of fuel - if anything, probably made it worse!

I did the valve clearances recently (actually, Toyota did), but I'm going to check them and clean out the EGR at the same time and see if that changes anything, will let you know.

Cheers,

Sam.

I can make mine do a similar thing when cruising on the highway. In my case I'm fairly happy to say it's injector noise. Wouldn't be surprised if yours is too :)

I have always had the light load rattle, it improved quite a bit recently when I replaced my injectors but was still quite noticeable. However I just started using 2 stroke oil after reading this thread 2 Stroke oil in D4D and it has made a massive difference, almost no noise at all now :D

My oil ratio isnt even that accurate as I chucked in 300ml to somewhere around half a tank (I run the 145L tank). I plan to drop my oil rates over the next few fills until I hear the rattle start to come back then go back to the last noiseless ratio and see how that pans out. Dumping in over 0.5L for a normal tank load just seems like too much to me despite the reccomended 200:1 ratio.
Cheers

Rattle noise in 2013 deisel hilux at around 2000rpm

Postby daegan on Fri, 08 Aug 2014 4:55 +0000

Hi Guys,

Last year i bought a brand new 2013 hilux SR diesel. It now has 15000km on the clock. I have noticed that around 2000rpm it gets what i describe as a rattle noise from the engine, it doesn't have a knock at cold idle like i have read can mean problems with the injectors, it just occurs at 2000rpm. The only resin i noticed it as we recently got a 2011 Hilux SR Diesel at work and it does not make this noise at the same rpm range.

Does anyone know what this is?

Any help greatly appreciated.

My 2013 sr does it to at the same rpm, I think its to do with engine load or something, like cause its under light load it gets a typical diesel rattle, someone I think one of the tuners on here said that once cause I noticed it to when I first got the car.

Standard D4D 2000rpm rattle. If it's not there I would take it back to the dealer and complain.

My 2010 auto does it horribly. Everything is whithin spec. Just the computer adjusting the timing at light load, all to do with emissions apparently. Normal but yes it's annoying.

Some two stroke oil in the diesel quietens things down a bit ;)
