3.0 D4d Timing belt changed - crank will not rotate???

Postby junek on Wed, 20 Nov 2013 2:25 +0000

Hi all,

I have just replaced the timing belt in my 2006 D4d hilux.

Was an easy job until i went to turn the motor over by hand with the new timing belt on and it would not spin the full 720degrees clockwise as suggested in the workshop manual. At around 540 degrees something was stopping the rotation inside the engine (Valve on piston presumably).

So i took it off, spun the cams and crank separately, returned them to their original location, re-installed belt making sure the marks were lined up 100% correct but now it won't even spin more than about 90degrees (clockwise).

I have no idea what I have done wrong!?

If the marks are lined up correctly then why won't the bugger spin?

Is it 360 degrees out?

it most certainly was not when i first put it back on. BUT now that i have fiddled with it 100 times, i guess it could be.

Should i rotate crank or cam 360 degrees?

The Crankshaft will rotate twice for every single rotation of the camshaft but being 360 degrees out shouldn't cause it to lock up so I would look for something else.
If you're sure you have the timing marks in the right place and the engine was running fine before you changed the timing belt it has to be something simple such as being a tooth out on the timing causing the compression to build up to the point where you can't turn it by hand, ie both valves closed and piston jamming against compression.

my mistake.
For future reference, don't turn the engine over by the cam pulley! It was skipping teeth while i turned it over.

Crank pulley is much harder to get to but its the only way to safely turn the engine over.

all fixed

thanks for your help.

Yes, only off the crankshaft pulley bolt, fellows.
I am glad you didn't try to start it with the starter motor. Good thinking.

Hi All. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I did this too and now my bottom pulley (the crank pulley?) is out of few mm. How do I realign it safely?

Sorry, I have a 2014 HiLux (KUN26..)

I reposted in the correct forum for my model (viewtopic.php?f=81&t=29361&p=436022#p436022).
