The Allrounder

Righto guys, thought I would start a build thred for my 2011 dual cab lux. It's been a pretty slow build thus far as am saving my pennies for a house so I'll see how I go.

My goal for the ute is to try and find the perfect half way point between ultimate 4x4, daily driver and the perfect, most practical tourer.

This is what she looked like the day I picked her up. Stock standard except for a Bury phone kit and a genuine hilux bull bar.

Image

Not long after I got her home I went and saw the blokes at Get Off Road in wodonga who hooked me up with a 2" lift, snorkel, 9,500lb winch and an 80 channel UHF.

Did the install of everything myself.

Snorkel was first to go on.

Image

Next was the lift.

Image

Then I waited a while before I installed the winch as I really wanted a tube bar and I finally found an xrox bar cheap and chucked that on then the winch.

Image

In the mean time I found a canopy off an old single cab hilux that was the right width but measured in at 2.6mt which was a little long but it was too cheap to say no. So I bought it, chopped it down to 1.8mt and got some new rip stop PVC canvas made and put it on.

I then got a hold of some shoes off a mate who took them off his old FJ cruiser so I put them on and headed off on a 4x4/camping/fishing trip up through the middle of nsw with a mate of mine. Here's a few pics of her then and just a few from another 4x4 trip I went on in the local forest near wodonga. Sort of all mixed up with the progress side of things.

Next on list would be new shoes. Looking at the Mickey Thompson MTZ's in 265/75/16. Unless anyone has anything bad about them?

Got plenty more that I want to do so I will keep you posted as I'm moving along.
Cheers

Cheers mate.

It was fairly easy as it came with a template of where to drill. The hardest part was getting bug enough balls to drill a massive hole in a car you have owned for a month. Haha but other then that pretty straight forward.
If I was to suggest something it would be that they tell you to drill 14mm holes to put a 8mm bolt through. I started at 10mm and made the ones bigger that needed to be. Not all of them.

Nice work mate.

I like this comment "My goal for the ute is to try and find the perfect half way point between ultimate 4x4, daily driver and the perfect, most practical tourer."

I think we all want that!!

Uhm mine is just one from rays. Had it for about 5 years now and it's great!

My mates is the one in the last picture. His is 100 times better then mine. His was just a $250 one off eBay but it is a heaps better design. It zips all the way to the feet which makes it a lot easier to put blankets and stuff in where mine only unzips halfway. They didn't come with the stretcher but mine only cost about $100 from rays and I wouldn't go anywhere without it. Makes a lot of difference!

Yeah this is true. That's my aim for the moment anyway but I'm like a girl when it comes to my car. I change my mind more often then my underwear. Haha I'm happy with it so far. Just gotta get some real wheels under it. Hopefully be getting them this week.

Thanks mate!

Well now I have been looking at doing something like this.

Image

I have weighed up the pros and cons and I think I can afford to lose the extra room in the canopy. And having a shorter tray will make it more offroad capable. Although I'm not all that sure. Something I will have to think about for a while. Any feedback would be great!

Was just wondering, I'm looking at getting tyres this week. I only want to get 265/75's at this stage but I want to move up to 285's after this set. I know that +10 offset is good for 285's but they require some chopping but if I only get 265's on a +10 offset I won't have to cut anything? Is this right? Just so I don't have to buy new rims as well when I move up a size. Also, do 285's fit on a 16x7 or would I need a 16x8?

I have 16x7 with a +10 offset with 265 75 16 atz 4 ribs. They only just scrub mud flap on full lock (only on one side). I do have a 3" lift so may have a tad more clearence.
I think a 285 would require an 8" rim, I went with 265's on a 7" to help hold the tyre on running low pressures

Aww right, too easy. I think I'll go with a 16x8 with a +10 and see how they end up. I'll be taking my mudflaps off anyway. Thanks for the reply! :)

Yeah, it's definitely on the cards, just gotta buy a new welder. Some how I don't think granddads old stick welder will be up to the challenge.

75 is fairly standard isn't it? :/

Well my mate is running a 28570/R16 and had to cut a small bit of the guard. He has no other rubbing issues with that. Im not smart enough to work out the percentage difference in height

Yeah, a 265/75 is only like 4mm shorter then a 285/70.
Oh well, I'll see how it goes.

Just a very small update, finally got the "Folding Back Seat Mod" done and I have no idea why it took me so long to do it. The easiest and cheapest and best mod that you will ever do to your Dual Cab. Anyone not sure if its worth it, IT IS! So much more room.

Have ordered my wheels and Tyres but their is a wait on the +10 offset rims. So as soon as they get here I will finally have some shoes under the Lux. I know as soon as I put them on I will want 285's but oh well.

I really gotta stop reading the fitting 35" tyres thread, because I am even contemplating that. I think ill get 265's and if I feel like I need 285's then ill get them and then I will have to have a long hard think about whether I need 35's or not.

Also, I was also smart enough to go halves with the old man in a new mig welder for his fathers day present. so going to seriously start thinking about building the tray pictured above. but first job with the new welder will be a set of rock sliders.

well that's all for now.
cheers

Can i be a bad influence and say buy the 285's first! haha, make em fit! it wouldnt require much cutting and mickey t's are generally on the marginally smaller end of the tire scale. Might save you an extra $12-1500 that you could spend elsewhere? i.e. dont buy the 265's? i just figure buying tires is such a big expense... less times ya have to buy em the better.

And i 100% agree with you about the back seat mod!

Anyone know the origin or dimensions for that canopy?
Cheers, Will
