andy666 build up - more stuff

Postby andy666 on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 12:17 +0000

When I started my build thread I wasn't paying attention and started it in the pre 2005 area, instead of the post 2005 area.
I have sent a PM to the moderator about getting it moved, but no response. So I'm just going to start a new build thread with the same info.
The old build thread in the pre 2005 area can be deleted if the moderators wish

Well I've owned my 05 hilux SR for 2yrs now so maybe its time I started a build thread. Be warned though that it will be a long and slow build up, as 4x4ing isn't my number one passion. I mostly got the hilux so that I could get down onto the beach most weekends during summer and for the carrying space. Although during winter I do go off road a bit for some fun.

When I picked the ute up it was already spec'd up a bit with:
OME heavy duty suspension
16" Alloys
245/75 BFG KM2 Muddies
ARB winch bullbar
Steel Tray
Alpine touch screen dvd player
Image

The first job I did was rip the alpine dvd player out, because there was no remote and using a touch screen while driving is a pain in the arse. Welcome Pioneer single DIN head unit.

What else has been done?
Fitted up some front recovery hooks on custom brackets.

Water trap fuel seperator, for some peace of mind.

Custom rock sliders

GME compact UHF in the ash tray slot. This was a lot harder to fit then I first thought, having to remove the top half of the dash

Well the tray has a heap of rust from being on the beach, so it's time to do something about it. On Thursday I dropped the tray at the sand blasters and next week it it getting resprayed. Rusted be gone :D
While the tray is off I'v decided to also respray the chassis. It's not nearly as bad as the tray, mostly just surface rust. So the last couple of days have been spent going nuts with a wire brush and spray paint.
So shiny

Today I decided to fit a 2nd lighter socket. Wired it up as constant 12V direct from the battery, but with a switch in the dash to turn it on and off.

Well there has been some improvements to my ute this week. Mostly projects that I had ordered the parts for, but hadn't had time to fit yet.

I finally got the tray back after being sand blasted and resprayed last week. So glad that it's finally done and the tray might last another couple of years. It was so bad that I was able to scrap off 50c sized flakes of rust, thats what comes from being on the beach every weekend.

Installed an 18" LED light bar. Massive improvement to night time driving. And found a genuine look switch on ebay for only $20
Image

While I was getting my LED on, I also wired in a Narva LED work light to the reverse lights. Mounted it in between the number plate lights. Nice and tidy and out of the way.

Also, I finally located the parts I needed to modify my High Idle Kit design to produce an "on-the-fly" adjustable hand throttle. Works a treat and still no engine fault light :D

Just finished adding this to the ute.

Eagle 1 nanowax.
I have actually been using this wax for about a year now and it bloody fantastic stuff. It's a synthetic wax that dries clears instead of white like most other polishes and waxes, so no white marks on window rubbers etc. in fact I actually do the black plastic mirror and strip at the bottom of the windscreen with it and they come up great.
Love it, recommend it.

Finished installing an oil catch can today. Hopefully this will help stop some of the oil vapor getting back into the intake and carboning it up.
Did a bit of a how to write up as well.

andy666 - mounting maxtrax

Postby andy666 on Fri, 19 Oct 2012 12:35 +0000

Picked up some maxtrax today from autobarn (*edit* $257 with a 15% off shopper docket :D)
Didn't know where I was going to mount them, I just knew that I wanted them out of the way but still easy to get to. I also wasn't very keen to drill or weld brackets to the tray as it has just been resprayed. Well after trying a few different spots I found that they fitted perfectly up between the cross rails on the tray. It's as if they are made for it! Just a few cam lock straps to stop them rattling around.
Also being out of sight it won't be so tempting for those with sticky fingers.

Re: andy666 build up - canopy finished

Postby andy666 on Sun, 22 Sep 2013 6:23 +0000

Been building this lockable cage over the last couple of months. Finally got it finished and canvassed last week, already to go camping for the long weekend.
The cage is all bolted together and the entire thing can be pulled apart into panels and stacked against the garage wall, taking up very little room.
Another benefit of the bolt together cage is that it can be used in several different configurations.
Full cage with canvas.
Full cage, no canvas.
Cage roof, canvas, no cage doors.
Rear hoop and stringers only.
Rear hoop only.
Standard tray back.

Also got my new Runva 11XP mounted over the weekend. No pictures, but it all mounted up well. The only issue I had was that the 11xp doesn't fit down the back of the bullbar. I didn't want to remove the bullbar by myself, so I split the winch into 3 parts (motor, drum and gearbox) and reassembled them inside the bar. Pretty easy to do and only took about 20mins.
