Load Sensing Proportioning Valve upgrade

Postby Alby on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 6:43 +0000

I have been trying a few different brake components over the last few years and tried a new setup about 1000 k's ago that seems to be the best so far
I have been running DBA slotted rotors for about 18 months with genuine pads, and have tried Bendix standard 4wd, HD 4 WD and lastly their Ultimate pads. Out of the the three the 4wd was probably the better ones

Anyway I was due for a replacement so have fitted the new DBA 5000? PawPrint rotors but have tried a new pad from the USA called Akabono which my mechanic has been trailing on half a dozen vehicles and getting good results.
The peddle feel is by far the best I have had, I am experiencing no brake fade, they work just as well cold (something the HD 4WD pads were bad for, they need a lot of heat to work) and minimal brake dust (ultimate pads are very dusty and sometimes squeal)
The supplier that my mechanic gets his brake parts through told him about a valve body upgrade that they have been doing to the LSPV that makes it more sensitive so activates better, cost was less than $100 so I thought I would give it a go.
I am not sure what they do but I had to send my valve to them for modification, I think they may drill out the valve port to increase the flow but I am only guessing
Anyway I am very happy the the outcome, I am not sure how much credit I should be giving to the valve body upgrade but I do feel like my rears are carrying more load now than previously ,(my rear was not touched apart from being cleaned and adjusted) and my peddle feel is great

Nice stuff Alby. So many combinations. Keen to hear if you still like the set up after a couple of thousand kms when everything has settled down.

Have you already adjusted your load valve arm up to the top of the threaded bar and then given your load valve arm the big bend?
Cheers Rod

Keen to hear more also. I extended my LSPV arm by 50mm after I had the lift put in and keep the rears adjusted. I drove a mate's '08 SR5 dual cab with nothing on the back running 32" KM2s and the brakes were nearly non-existent

i'll put a pic up tomorrow, I can't remember the thread size but I found a coupling nut to suit aswell as a 3" long bolt of the same thread, screwed it all together and raised the arm up 40 odd mm to match the OME lift.
Got one here, excuse the huge photo, photobucket won't let me resize the last three photos I've uploaded for some reason

I will get some more details on Friday and post them up

Rocket the 5000 are not much dearer than the slotted so thought why not.

Am heading off to the Simpson next week so will chalk up another 6000 odd k so will report back after that

Pretty much. The valve is bolted to the chassis and the rod is bolted to the diff. By lifting the car you're basically activating the valve reducing braking preassure to the rear brakes.

The thread is m8. I welded on a new length 100mm long of 8mm rod.

I jacked up the rear axle with stands underneath and started the engine let the clutch out all the way in second gear. Full brakes and there was nothing. I just adjusted the nuts and raised the arm about 50mm up the thread until I had a good pedal feel then went for a drive a thousand times better. I had brake then. Haha

Thanks Mitch

Did any of you roughly measure what it was at standard height. Going to check mine later and I just want a base to start from as I'm not sure if the mechanic would of adjusted it or not.

Nice, I had a feeling it was but for some reason wasn't sure.

Mate no worries. I was just sharing a bit of info, add what you like, it is all relevant to improving brakes

I moved the valve its self down lower on the chassis, the holes are elongated, then wound the arm up higher and seemed enough for my lift didnt have to extend it, locks up all 4 wheels on the gravel with, and without a load now :D

Does anyone have any idea how someone would go about completely removing the valve and replacing it with constant load one????
