Servicing costs per km

Sorry if this has been covered but the new search turns up so much irrelevant stuff it is quicker just to start a new thread.

Has anyone ever done the sums and worked out how much the servicing costs per km for the 160k warranty period.

I have a good reason for asking.

With sudden changes in family circumstances I find myself doing thousands of km's in my hilux to get stuff sorted out, my family have kindly offered to share the fuel costs, bless them but what about the servicing costs, at dealer prices every 10k. I know there is a lot of other stuff to factor into it too, seeing their vehicles are sitting in their driveway while mine is chewing through its useful life.

I want to work out what the servicing costs are for 160000k and average it out, they will still be way in front.

I would be surprised if someone on here hasn't done the sums before buying their lux, if not I will do the sums in the near future and post them up.

Have a good new year everyone and stay safe.

Mate "new posts" ( and includes new replies ) are ones YOU havent seen. since your last visit. Once you have seen them they will drop off your "new posts" after half an or or so
If you leave the site for a week you will see all the new ones and new replys during that week when you return.

Ok so now I just hope someone answeres the question I asked in this thread originally.

Well a follow up with prices quoted from my dealer.

70,000km/42 month - $348inc.
80,000km/48 month - $855inc.
90,000km/54 month - $472inc
That works out to 5.5 cents per km and using $1.30 per litre that's roughly half the price of the fuel used, so every dollar you put in the tank, 50 cents goes into the servicing jar.

To me that is not cheap motoring.

I am looking round for comparison quotes from qualified mechanics for servicing to keep my warranty so if any in the area have the figures close handy please feel free to pm me. I pass through Brisbane quite regularly so a few hours stop is manageable.

itll be heaps less than this if its still new as you should have capped price servicing from toyota, i think it was $170 a service but im not positive on that

Toyota charge a fortune post capped price, so take it elsewhere, or at least do the minor services yourself

a minor service is essentially a grease and oil change. about 2 hours work and $50 in consumables

This is the first new car I have ever owned so is the only car I have ever paid to have serviced for only one reason, and I have been driving my own vehicles since 1978 so might be familiar with the routine. It is the all important rubber stamp that is being paid for as my trade certificate is not that of a mechanic.

I'm pretty sure once the $170 capped price servicing finishes it increases to $250 capped price servicing for the last 3 years.
Well mine did

That must have been a deal offered by your particular dealer, the extended warranty offered by my dealer is on the proviso that I get it serviced there, which is a bit of a problem if I am travelling at the time, and becomes very expensive.

Unless you are exceeding 10,000kM per 6 month period the km you do are irrelevant to the service costs. Services are 6 months or 10,000kM, whichever comes first. If you are exceeding 10,000kM per 6 months then you start to incur extra service costs as you would be servicing at say 4 monthly intervals rather than 6 months. I guess this second scenario is what is concerning you? What will cost more with the higher km is tyres and brakes.

The $ factor that is more important in this scenario (to me anyway) is the drop in value of the car. You may be talking $10,000 even $15000 difference in resale between 2 x otherwise identical cars other than one has averaged 15,000kM per annum versus 30,000kM per annum, so at 5 years old one has 75000kM and the other 150,000kM. In any $ calculations this will swamp the extra servicing costs.

I would go see someone else for service costs, an ex toyota mech does them in town for about $200, and does a much better job than the dealership does unfortunately (I wouldn't trust the dealership with my car) but in saying that, I do 65,000km a year average, so it isn't economical for me to have someone else service my car either, I do it myself, and paid for a single phase hoist after what would of been a few years of servicing costs.
