Toyota to cease manufacturing in Aus?

Postby jaybags on Mon, 10 Feb 2014 1:57 +0000

More bad news for Australia's automotive industry.
"TOYOTA is expected to make major announcement later this afternoon on the future of its Australian carmaking business.

Senior sources have told the Herald Sun they believe the company chiefs will reveal today that they will cease making cars in Australian in 2017.

Staff are expecting to be briefed by Toyota bosses this afternoon.

The company is expected to make a public announcement afterwards."

Not surprised at all. When the resources dries up we'll be exporting chop sticks and fortune cookies....

I do feel for the workers in the factories, and all the people involved with making the parts to keep the line going. A very VERY sad day to remember. Been on the line and seen all the hard workers at it. But to export a Camry for a 3000 dollar loss is a hard thing to keep going.
I am very saddened about the news!

Yes very sad but a reality of not being able to compete with O/S wages and being a small country

So the government chips in mega bucks to build a hybrid camry. Toyota says they can't make money on the cars here. So they move all the machinery to build the cars to Thailand, pay far less wages then ship the cars back with no import duty. Hmm, nobody every said the Japanese were stupid.

Surely the government assistance for the hybrid camry can't be anywhere near the amount of $$ as the government hand out for Mitsubishi and ford . And good on toyota for sticking it out as long as they have , after the 380 Mitsubishi failure toyota sure had the balls to release the aurion .

Perhaps the price might go down now.
Though I expect it will be same old, same old, bend over Australians with greater profits for Toyota.

Toyota to cease manufacturing in Aus?

We will notice no difference at all.

except for the job loses. Which is very sad

Camry is made in 3 other location in the world as is the 2ar engine.

The toyota engine plant made mega factories tv show and is the only engine factory outside japan for the 2ar engine.
.
As for all other toyota brands in Australia they are already imported so price will not change.

The only exception to this is as because there will be not car manufacturing plants in Australia. If the government drops the import tax on cars which they should. This will make them cheaper.

All i can add to this story is that the bloody govt better make sure that all the manufacturing workers out of a job get a fair crack at being retrained for the mining/gas sector. No more 457 visa holder allowed to fill jobs that Aussies can easily and readily fill !
