yep, me too for towing
And 120 at 2600rpm isnt very quiet in mine,so at least give us better insulation as well.
dropping those revs down a couple hundred wouldnt hurt either.......

Does anyone know if you can put a 6 speed manual gear box from a toyota prado 6 speed diesel in a Toyota 97 hilux for highway driving because my hilux diesel is doing 3000 revs doing 100 km/h and is as loud as anything and chews through few like no tomorrow, and only gets worse when I go to 110km/h (3300rp)I have reduced the revs mildly by a about 300rpm by putting bigger tyres on but this is only a short term solution, as I have also driven a 6speed prado and the 6th speed is great for the highway 110km/h

depending on engine power etc, an easier solution might be to just change your diff gears.

I just got back from the UK and france , mate was trying to get me to stay and live ther, so of course i had to price up another new hilux or ship mine over,,, priorities  , oh and how far it is to a motorcross track

A new hilux is 10K cheaper after the conversion and come with a 6th gear,, and a butt ugly rear bar ;) .

Would this gearbox fit our Aus 2012 Hilux?

Spot on with ur second paragraph hellbound. Sitting in the sweet spot not only reduces the load on the engine but also allows u to access max torque instantly.

Whoever said 100km at 2000rpm in fifth sucks is an idiot, the engine is sitting perfectly in the meat of the torque curve, if there was a 6th gear it would lower the revs to under 2grand and be a slug when trying to overtake...

My last two work utes - triton (v6) and navara (diesel) both sat way over 2k rpms at 100 and the v6 was sitting at 3000 rpm which IS crap as there not much more left in the revs to get to a higher vehicle speed...

I had a 08 hilux d4d 5 speed manual, traded it on a 08 prado gxl d4d 6 speed manual and rpm in top gear at 100km/h is near identical (prado is around 2100 @ 100km/h) but that's were the similarity stops. I realise the prado has more torque (410mn) but it's a long way in front of the hilux in normal driving and heavy towing which I do a fair bit of. I recently drove a manual hilux wasn't very old and I wouldn't buy one unless they put a 6 speed in them gearbox felt sloppier and had a long throw compared to my prado. Don't get me wrong, for the majority they do the job, but it wouldn't be hard for Toyota to drop the 6 speed in them I think it would make a good deal of difference and help bridge the gap to the ford and Mazda utes.
Cheers.

The best solution would be the whole prado package ie; lower diff ratios, 410 nm tune, 6 speed manual with 275 mm clutch or 5 speed auto and bolt the part time transfer on the back.

I've just come from a Jeep Wrangler diesel to the hilux, and as much as I loved the Jeep, the gearing was woeful. The hilux is an absolute breath of fresh air in comparison. Really hammers home to me the importance of proper R&D and many years of experience/tweaking because for me the hilux 5sp fits the engine like a glove.

The 2.8L VM Motori in the Jeep (same engine in the new Colorado) was significanly more peaky and revvy, but had a usable rpm band of about 1500rpm and if you weren't in that band, forget it! So lots of changing gears which got old real quick. It had a 6sp gearbox, and compared to the Hilux it probably did 200rpm less at 120km/hr in top gear. Not much difference really, and the difference that did exist is probably more to do with the moronic 3.21 diff ratio they put in it.

So anyway, adding another gear doesn't always make it better, unless the engineers get it right. It also doesn't always mean lower rpm at highway speeds. Personally I am absolutely stoked with the Hilux and its 5sp manual box.

Not sure which Navara are you talking about - mine is a 7 speed auto with 3l v6 td - it has 500Nm at 1500 and 550Nm from 1750 to 2500 rpm. It revs 2000rpm at 120km/h. As my previous ute was d4d I can compare - hills are covered as if they are flat in the Navara at a pace of your choice...d4d is a good honest engine but it's performance is outdated .

any more info on a 6spd box for the Hilux?

I'm running 33's and while the change to 3.7 ratio diffs helped, I'd really like lower ratios.
So, change to 4.1 ratios and a 6spd box should give me the best of both worlds (highway speed and slower crawl). not to mention the extra torque

Yea people complain about the 1KD being gutless but when you have come from a poorly designed diesel motor you realise how good it is, I had two D22 navaras before my lux a 3.0 and 2.5 both were pretty poorly optimised engines, I kind of miss my 3.0 one though, was a pretty simple motor to work on, in low range it was quite decent.

When my rolux is empty I push 3rd a little harder to 80ks & go straight to 5th on the flat or down a hill.

Seems like having 6th would just mean more changes.

I had a 3.0ltr TD Rodeo and it sat on 2500rpm doing 100kms and it chewed the fuel and had no balls to overtake, I think it's fantastic that my 2012 sr sits on 2grand doing 100kms and you can still put your foot down and something actually happens not just more noise!!!
