2013 Hlux 6-speed manual transmission?

Postby patrick.2sv on Wed, 19 Sep 2012 5:18 +0000

Anyone knows if we get a 6-speed manual transmission for the 2013 Hilux like some Fortuners get?
Would be great!

Unless they change the diff gearing I don't think they need to. the ford rangers, landcruisers and patrols are totally different to the hilux and I gotta say, I hate the way my hilux is geared. I tow a 2tonne boat. I would like to see 90L fuel tanks standard with diesel hiluxs aswell....

The hilux has a broad power and and doesn't really need a 6 speed. Having driven a car with a six speed I can say they are overrated and only required on a vehicle with a narrow power band. All in all having to change gears all the time cos your engine is a piece of shit that only produces power across 1000 rpm is a joke.

Do you drive an the highway much?
I wouldnt mind fitting a prado 6 speed in my hilux as Im do 150ks a day on the highway and would make a better (quieter/more fuel efficient trip)

ideally, you wouldn't be changing gears any more often at all, you would just have an extra gear to slot into at highway speeds.

At it stands, the Hilux can only do about 80km in 5th gear before it starts chewing the juice alot more (in the diesels). At 110km/h in 5th any economy by having a diesel is greatly offset by how high you're revving.

I also own a 6 speed prado. I generally find myself skipping past gears on the up change when unloaded. The difference in revs at 100k/h is not much different from my 5 speed hilux

The Hilux could do with lower 1st, and second gears, even third could be a bit lower. I think Prado diffs and ratio's with the 6 speed would be ideal. My 120 series that I had before the Hilux was far better for towing and pulling the boat out with its different gearing. Hence our clutch problems.

There's one more facelift coming for the hilux that is a more significant. Than any previous ones to see it out to the next model which has been delayed till 2016.

More gears would mean either a peakier torque curve like the navaras which with their increased peak torque but short powerband require you to change gears more often to keep in the rev range. Or you are running a lower final drive ratio requiring more "shorter" gears to get you to speed.

Don't forget. 6th gear can be sometimes a 2nd overdrive, like on 200 series cruiser which doesn't come into use until after 120kmh or so.

Its not the extra gears you have to think about but the overall engine torque/final drive ratio aswell as transmission gearing.

Main reason for the 4 speed in the diesel hilux other than cost is the flat torque torque that doesn't require a 5th gear (thou many would differ and prefer a "crawl" ratio'd first)

I have been thinking of getting a Prado 6th speed gear box and put in Chancha_Blanca (my 2006 SR) since Chancha_Plateada (2012 SR5) is now my dailyy ride...
...Now thinkg about it... chancha_Blanca is my current guine pig for 35" project.

6 gears would be nice, but only if they were spread out better!

2000rpm @ 80km/h in 4th gear really sucks

edit:corrected rpm / speed

I prefer the strong gearbox and good power profile of the existing Hilux than the weak, gear crunching 6 speeds and poor power profiles of competitors.

Well the new pathfinder has a 7 speed auto with a pretty powerful engine so there might be something to it. But in a manual Iux a high 6th gear would b nice but I would hate the gears spread out more coz there is no need for more gear changes to get to the speed limit

Exactly - 5 speed is perfect for the spread of torque we have with the d4d, navaras / tritons need a 6th gear as their peak torque is higher being on a 2.5litre engine.

Whoever said 100km at 2000rpm in fifth sucks is an idiot, the engine is sitting perfectly in the meat of the torque curve, if there was a 6th gear it would lower the revs to under 2grand and be a slug when trying to overtake...

My last two work utes - triton (v6) and navara (diesel) both sat way over 2k rpms at 100 and the v6 was sitting at 3000 rpm which IS crap as there not much more left in the revs to get to a higher vehicle speed...
60% of the time, it works every time

I'd only like a six speed to get a lower 1st gear.
