Ram-head vs Rear-Facing snorkel

Postby JakeLux97 on Tue, 25 Jul 2017 7:51 +0000

G'day guys,

Been browsing for a snorkel for my 1997 non turbo (ln106 2.8D) lux and I'm undecided as to get a plastic ram head snorkel like a safari or a rear facing stainless snorkel made up from somewhere like MoonLight customs.
I know stainless ones are fairly pricey and I much prefer the look of them but I'm unsure if there are any real cons of having the rear-facing head when compared to the ram-heads.

Cheers

Rearward facing actually pulls air away from the engine at highway speeds! Not to mention I'm yet to see a stainless one look any good fitted, all look like a hack job. My 2c!

On a chassis dyno, a NA V6 loses about 10-15rwkW regardless of which way you face it! It is a massive intake air restriction for a NA engine, and on a 4cyl 2.8 NA diesel you need every hose you can muster! Talk to Chiptorque about it.

You'll be wasting your money on a stainless snorkel . Go plastic

if there is it would be very minimal. You wouldn't even notice

I would think even at 110kph the air pressure difference would be negligible, same as the air forced by a ram head, by the time it goes through the air filter the extra pressure would be lost.

My guess would be power loss. Try breathing through a 2m length of 20mm conduit.
