Front tow hitch for parking and winch anyone done this ?

Postby ng_newbie on Tue, 08 Mar 2022 10:19 +0000

G'Day

I would like to make it easier to park trailer, boat, camper ... so wanted to know if anyone has a hitch on the front as well as the back ?

Also hoping to attach a winch so I can move from the front to the back, anyone got a hitch winch ?

Thxs

Just learn to reverse a trailer
You can put a slip in hitch in your bull bar just make sure you weld it on good.

Mate of mine had a front hitch on his hilux years ago because the shed he kept his van in had about 1" clearance on each side. He had it made up at an engineering shop (haymen reese style tube) so he only had one tongue to use front and back. Anchored back onto the chassis rails where the bulbar mounted, just meant slightly longer mounting bolts for the bullbar and a square hole in the bottom of the bullbar.

Have a look at the caravaners forums.
I might be wrong.

If you do put one in the bullbar put it to the left hand side so when you're backing the van you can see down the side of the van (an old caravanner trick) that way you can fit in tight spots. Because it's not used on the road it can be a lighter construction.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

You raise a few things here. The easiest way to do this would be to run a piece of Box section (the right size to fit your Haymen Reese style tongue) straight along the chassis rail utilising the bullbar mounting bolts. Quick, simple and sorted then.

Or bolt a suitable piece of angle to the strong point on the bullbar on the left hand side with a tow ball fitted?

He wants to use it is a winching Point as well putting it on one side means you're winching off one side of the bar putting a lot of pressure on that one side to use as a winching Point should be in the centre to spread the load or use a pulley block back to the other side.

Yeah, extra piece of 50mm diameter steel, it'd work, but my mate started out that way and had to change it coz he couldn't get a pink slip with the steel "Protruding out the front of the vehicle". That was NSW, not sure about other places.

Another reason for the Haymen Reese style box section, you can use one of those aluminium hitching points for winching and not risk a 50mm lump of steel flying around.
