How to tell if SR5 or SR made to Look Like SR5?

I'm looking at an SR5 dual cab, and it looks pretty good, especially for the money and Km's, just wondering if the ute I'm looking at is dodgy or a genuine SR5, as its advertised as a 2013 but when I checked on VicRoads it's listed as a 2012, so I've become a little worried, especially as I want the SR5 for the 6 airbags where as the SR's only have the two if I'm correct. now how would I tell if this blokes dodgy or not? it has the carpet, the airbags appear to be there, but as I don't know much about hilux's, and I know heaps of people turn falcons into XR6's from the base so wondering if that happens with Hilux's?
thanks

I would do a revs check, get the VIN number off him and you might be able to call Toyota and get them to tell you what it was sold as.

It could be a 2012 runout model, sold in 2013?

It also has the knobs for the Aircon, not the Screen and buttons if that means anything?

Having had a SR5 2013 all the usual suspects.
Firstly VIN don’t lie. Toyota will tell you what it truly is.
As for interior
Carpet
Digital A/C controls
SAT NAV was standard in SR5 think it was a SR Option.
I’m not a guru but if the airbag thing is true then if you do a visual inspection then pull a door seal back above drivers seat you will find the curtain airbag is right there.

Exterior
SR5 Badges. ( easy to fake)
Chrome door handles (harder)
Chrome mirrors
Check if tub looks to have been replaced. SR5 smooth side SR is j hook side

I’m sure this has come up before just can’t find it at the moment and there are plenty other tell tales I can’t remember right now.
Like I can’t remember if the ESC was stock across the range or a SR5 only thing. ABS was stock for both

There was optional VSC on SR at that time if I remember correctly. Airbags too possibly.

The more I follow this thread, the more I think you should avoid this vehicle.

If you have checked similar luxes, years and prices AND still think it's dodgy then it probably is dodgy. It may not be a SR made to look SR5, but something must be wrong.

Unless you are in a tearing hurry, keep looking around.

Yep, my 2012 SR5 has digital climate control, leather steering wheel and the auto shifter is leather too. If you've got a funny feeling about the car then stay away in my opinion. Trust your gut :)

Buyer beware. (But this turned out fine for us amazingly)
In the past we purchased 2 older (pre 05 lux’s) at auction my father and I went over them in haste and the first was fine and the price was right.
But the second just looked funny something was off. We couldn’t quite tell in the haste of a quick auction. So to play it safe we slashed our max bid level and we still ended up winning.
Once Home we looked over it properly and we realized we actually had purchased not one but four cars.
Chassis
Drive train
Body
Tub
We’re all from different vehicles.
In saying that it’s still registered and still doesn’t miss a beat. Compliments to who ever did the work.
A story like this is ultra rare that’s why I am always wary if my gut says something is off then usually something is off.

Sounds like a cut and shut but all fine if done correctly :)

Just goes to prove buyer beware! :)

To be honest at certain stages an SR with VSC pack was more desirable than an SR5. The timeframe i’m talking about SR got the auto front diff, flares and airbags if optioned plus the SR5 type tub. You didn’t get the useless cr@p attached that many people threw away like alloy bar, rear step, side steps and fog lights (that went with a front bar addition). Sure you didn’t get the dual zone climate air or the in dash Satnav but honestly you are better off with a good aftermarket double DIN unit anyway with free or cheaper map updates, and often the speaker wires were there for the rears. Plus the seats etc were the same. And until the SR5 got 17” rims many people turfed the earlier SR5 15” alloys pretty quickly. In 2010 I only bought an SR5 as I wanted the ABS and airbags all round, would have had an SR if I could have optioned that stuff that was later on (like 2012-ish onwards) either optional or standard on an SR. Out of interest the curtain airbags on that 2010 either saved my life or saved me from a serious head injury when it was written off in 2011. With the way the collision happened the driver’s side curtain airbag smacked me in the left ear when the forces somehow saw my head go out the driver’s window. Worth every extra $ spent on the Hilux with it.
