2009 Hilux, Want to install 2011/2012 Hood Scoop

Postby Tyson2Field on Thu, 09 Aug 2018 11:06 +0000

Hi all,
I own a 2009 Dual Cab Hilux (4x4 SR5), and the off-centre, thin hood scoop really annoys me. A lot. It's really, really, really frustrating. I've emailed my local toyota dealer, but they (so far), haven't responded to me. I simply asked if they could swap a 2011/12 bonnet onto my car, so I could have the newer style scoop, and just asked for the price. I may have misread somewhere, but I believe the rest of the bonnet is exactly the same structure, so a straight swap should be simple, right? Anyways, I'd also be fine installing a landcruiser style scoop on my lux, but the main problem I have is don't know whether just sikaflexing a new scoop on is going to hold it well enough - I'll be taking it offroad, and on top of that, I want to keep it legal. If I sikaflex say, an Ebay scoop onto the bonnet, take off the old scoop, and cut a bigger hole, would it affect my insurance, or liability in an accident? Is it legal? Essentially, I'm just after suggestions and some clarification. I live in Victoria, if that helps.

Cheers in advance

I'd call some wreckers and buy one second hand in the colour you want.

I dont think the hole in the bonnet is different, that has to remain the same so the seal on top of the engine cover still mates, think you might just have to drill some more mounting holes. Not sure if the colours are the same in the later models but if you can find a second hand black one it will look ok.

There was a company making replacement widemouth scoops in a thread in here, they might still have some left but read the thread, i think there was a couple of mounting issues.

They didnt change till late 2012 so a 2011 is the same as you have.

I cant see it affecting your insurance.

2011 is the same as 2009 as far as I know. You want 2012-15 model onwards just so the wreckers you ask get it right. The bonnets look similar, wouldn't be surprised if they swap. You'd want all the stuff underneath too that seals against the intercooler, and probably the different intercooler too so it works right.

Here is a 2011, mine is 7/2011 and is the same except V6 and still had 15" wheels:

Monster Rides had a bigger one that went on the original mounts, but centred the scoop on the bonnet, not sure if they still make them.

As for the bonnet fitting, the intercooler was still in the same place, the only issue would be the leading edge, as the grille and lights are different, there's a chance you'd have to change all front panels to suit.

Why change the bonnet?? Pretty sure the hole in it is the same, just stick a late model scoop on it.

Any further info on the aftermarket scoops?
