Insect/bug protection from highway/country drive.

Postby Ragingboner on Thu, 26 Jan 2017 1:56 +0000

The last time I drove around country NSW which was in my Mazda 3 at the time had bugs everywhere on the car by the end of the trip and it was a massive pain in the ass to clean.

I will be going all around country NSW again (this time in my sr5) within the next 2 weeks though this time I dont want the insects to be stuck everywhere on the car, radiator, intercooler.

What can I do to stop the insect issue?

shade cloth over the front will stop the bugs in the radiator but will still let air through unfortunately bugs are just a side effect of outback driving

Chicken wire works best, mozzie or shade cloth can reduce air flow... chicken wire will "cut up" or hold them off .

I haven't got around how to use photo bucket or what were we use here but I could
Email you pics of my SR5 front grill.

I've seen a guy glad wrap the front of his car before a trip. Seemed to work ok.

And yes he didn't cover the radiator etc.

As above, fly screen/ shadecloth behind (or in front of) your grille, and you can get that clear roll-on, peel-off paint protector (which i have used on the Commodore I had before the Hilux), it does work well using it on your mirror caps and front bumper, which is where they'll hit the most.

Security screen wire behind the grill... Get the stainless steel ones, difficult to cut but lasts forever. Look for crimsafe installer, they will sell it and cut it for you
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

for the paint work, if you make sure you give the lux a good clay bar / hard wax before you go. It will make any washing a lot easier!
