Aftermarket grille and "toyota" badge

Postby BustedArseTankCo. on Mon, 07 Sep 2015 5:21 +0000

Hi all,
A while back I saw a post and the bloke had an aftermarket grille with an old fashioned "Toyota" badge on it.
I can't seem to find it on here, so basically I was wondering if anyone else has seen this? and where you get the grilles and the badges?
There are similar grilles on ebay but they look to have a very fine mesh in them, not like the thick mesh I saw.

I'm sure someone will have a simple answer!

Hey I was looking at that one pretty closely as well. He used one of those mesh grills off eBay but swapped out the mesh himself to a heavier gauge. He then flogged an FJ Cruiser grill to get the TOYOTA.

Looked the goods!

Yeah it looked spot on in my opinion!
Any idea where you would find some decent mesh to put in the grille?

Thanks!

It's called a "Satoshi" grill, copy the old landcruisers. Lots of DIY threads on other Toyota forums.

Yep, as singlespeed said, this is the Satoshi grille modification and you see it done on a lot of Tacoma's in the U.S. There are a lot of threads on this on the Tacoma forums if you're bothered to track them down and a few YouTube do-it-yourself time-lapses as well.

You can buy a mesh grille from eBay (sourced from Thailand) and just attach the badge to that (also sourced from eBay unless you want to buy directly from Toyota). A criticism of those mesh grilles is that the mesh is quite poor in quality so you'll probably want to replace it.

Or, you can modify your existing grille but cutting out the centrepiece and attaching the mesh there.

I'm looking into this myself and here were the resources I collated:
Simple to do (especially as we can essentially buy the grille frame and cut out the weak mesh) but looks sweet.

Wow! Thanks for the info, that pretty much answered every question I had!
I think I'm going to give it a crack. I'll try to keep you posted.

Thanks again!

Just a heads up to whoever wants to modify there grill, make sure you plan it out and don't stuff it as the genuine grill with the trim bits and badge is over a grand to replace from Toyota

For anyone thinking of doing this grille, there are a number of TRD-esque mesh grilles on eBay that look perfect for the job.

I'd advise against buying one of these. I bit the bullet a few weeks ago on one as the pictured item looked completely different to what is usually listed. I already had a negative perception of these grilles from some comments from forum members, hence avoiding them.

Received the grille last night and it's terrible...cheap plastic that bends with no effort (hold the grille up and the plastic flexes), poor paint job, bent top and bottom mounts...horrible. However, I've been told that the grille does hold up even when off-road...somehow.

As for the badge, a 60 Series Landcrusier badge will do the job but it might be a bit large.

I bought one of the cheap ebay ones it's shit wouldn't waste the money on one. I'm gonna try and find a standard one cheap and modify that.
