Will a 4wd bull bar fit a 2wd Hilux?

Postby gibbit on Tue, 13 Aug 2013 1:59 +0000

G'day all. I did a serch on this but came up with nothing.

I have a 2006 2wd SR Hilux and am chasing a second hand bull bar for it. Can anyone tell me if a 4wd one from the same model (2005-11) will fit?

Cheers.

41 views and no comment? :?

Is this a stupid question, or does knowbody know the answer?

I know alot of things are compatable between the 2wd and the 4wd but not sure about the front end.

Mate is a tricky one to answer and the possibility of heaps of stuff going pair shaped if you have an accident with the wrong bullbar fitted could be huge.
I do believe they do fit but and I stress very VERY illegal!

Thanks for the reply Mate.

Do you know why they are dangerous in an accident and illeagal? Is it airbag compatability or is the 2wd, a lighter front end?

In all honestly I do not know. It just would not be worth the risk!

I might ask the insurance company and see if they would still cover it with a 4wd bar on it.

Cripps, an old member on here had a 2wd lux. He went to ARB and asked them if they would fit a bullbar to his hilux. The answer he got was no. It was a lot of years ago and I'm only going on memory but the reason they gave was that the chassis isn't the same strength as the 4wd equivalent in regard to mounting points and they would have to drill the chassis to fit the bar for additional mounting points.

Was up the local shopping centre and the 2wd hilux they use to pick up the trolleys has a TJM bar fitted to the front of it.
Proves that its possible but doesn't answer if its legal or not.

Thatbar would be specially ordered for a 2wd as the mounting points are different for a 4wd

Factory Bullbar on a 2011 Dual Cab 2WD

Postby brick_paver on Sun, 02 Apr 2017 11:11 +0000

My apologies if this has been covered before, but I can't find any reference anywhere.
I have purchased a s/h genuine Toyota Bullbar, I am told is from another Hilux within the 2005-2011 model range, to put on to my 2011 Dual Cab SR- 2WD. My main question is,....is there different mounting hardware between the 2WD and 4WD Hilux utes because even though we have gone most of the way to fitting this one, with all adjustment variation 'taken up' and the bar itself all but fitting into place,...it will NOT close up so as to be flush below the headlights, guards and the general 'flush look' that one would expect.
There is an average gap variation along the top of the bullbar and the body of the front of around 8 to 15mm that will not take up, no matter how tight every bolt is. Surely not far enough out for this bar to be the 'wrong model'.
It looks for all intents and purposes (and visually) as if the bullbar needs to go up about 10/15mm and tilted back about 10/15mm but hard as we have tried to do this, along with loosening and retightening all the nuts and bolts, the gap still refuses to close up.
The only thought that I can come up with is,.....IS there any difference in the mounting hardware between the 2WD and the 4WD because while this bullbar tries to 'fit like a glove', it still looks from the front to be sitting slightly lower. COULD this bar had come off of a 4WD and not quite squeezing on to a 2WD.

I had a 2009 sr dual cab 2x4 diesel, and later fitted an alloy Toyota 4x4 bull bar.
The bullbar had a sticker on the inside saying only for 4x4 models.
It fit fine... I didn't tell the bullbar it was being mounted to a 2x4.

It didn't complain.

Yes they fit fine. (2005-2015, I'm not sure about the newer model)

Why are people here who don't know making so many un-informed comments? (I guess thats the internet).

Anyway I've fitted 2 Genuine Alloy Bullbars, a Smartbar and I've also seen the Steel Breaker Bars fitted. Its not a problem, the 2wd's physical bumper, supports etc are much the same, bolts straight on.

They get through Rego Inspections up here in the NT, not sure how the Nazi's in NSW & Vic would view it ( wow I'm glad I don't live in NSW & VIC, the Traffic and Inspection mobs down there do seem to have gone way over the top and are a law unto themselves ).

A word of caution though, the extra weight of the steel bars should be considered.
