It was on there from Toyota its just a little rubber strip, suppose it just stops some of the dust and crud from entering never really payed attention to it before now.

Some pics to show it does clear my battery, it just touches on the side but when I loosen the clamp I can push it over a few mm and the top clamp bolt just clears it on close which could be trimmed as well if needed.

Hey Gaza, sorry if you have to go out in the rain to measure again :D but how much do these lift the hood? Same as standard or more? I have a boat hanging from the ceiling of my garage, so clearance up top might be an issue for me if I were to get these, as the hood just about clears it right now.
Cheers,

It does raise the bonnet more its about 25-30mm higher (measured from bonnet stay to bonnet)

Bonnet struts - 2012 SR5

Postby Skrewdriver on Sun, 10 Jan 2016 6:16 +0000

Has anyone here used/bought/installed the gas struts for their Hilux? I am interested in getting a set for my 2012 SR5, but I would like to know what are they like in regards to lifted height of bonnet once they are fully extended, as I don’t see much point if they lift the bonnet to either the same height or less once they are installed?

Any feedback would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

I brought a pair off eBay (about $100 from memory)
They are great, they hold the bonnet higher than the standard strut
Highly recommended

I bought a set off ebay (Sustec)- they arrived promptly and fitted up easily, can't fault them.

Hey Skrewdriver.
I've bought some gas struts off The Gas Strut Guys. Just google them. Very friendly and quick as postage. Much cheaper than most as well.
Cheers.

Might be a little bit too late to comment and I apologise

I have bought an ebay gas bonnet strut kit and it works just fine

Only issue I found is when I "pop the bonnet" I have to then dig my fingers under it to pull it up

My guess is the struts are pushing some downward pressure on the struts

Jacko - what is stopping your strut from fitting in your setup? It should fit as GS does on the previous page.
Thats a supercharge 105Ah battery in aux tray too. Only just touches the battery handle

Yes you need 2 struts to effectively hold the bonnet up

G'day Deadlybeast, thanks for helping out mate! I am not using an ARB tray, I have an AutoForce stainless tray which also includes bracing to the side panels to stop the tray from moving around, i have attached a picture of how it works.

Aha. Looks like you would have to refab that bracket to drop down to fit a strut on that side

I bought my sustec on ebay also,
Fit great my only fault with them is it is abit hard once you pop the bonnet to lift it as you really have to get your fingers under there to lift it
I think this is due to the strut pushing down on it

Is anyone running bonnet struts with a catch can mounted at the top left of the engine bay where the M8 thread is? Looking to get some struts as I'm vertically challenged ( ) but I'm doubting they're really compatible if you've got a catch can in the recommended install area.

Hello Gaza
The link you had has expired. Where did you get the black strut kit from, I can only find a red kit. My Hilux is a 2013 model.
Cheers in advance

I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd try posting here before starting a new topic.
I too would be interested in up to date details on the black strut kit.

Or ideally, could someone with the gas struts fitted be able to read the numbers off the side of the gas strut, to find something equivalent the extended length, stroke length and especially the force (Nm) would be fantastic. If someone knew those details it would be really appreciated.

Cheers, Heath
