Gas bonnet struts

I wondered about the second battery getting in the way too...

Can they still be installed with some mucking around or would it be a case of relocating the second battery??

Ashy let us know how you go, cheers mate.

Gas bonnet struts

Just arrived back in Aussie today, fitted the gas struts, (20 min job) they fit perfect, holds the bonnet open with the recall as well. I just had to move a relay that I installed for the spotlights. The struts arrived within 7 days of ordering.

Ashy,

Do you have any pics you can post of the finished project? I am keen to see the difference with the ones TOMUCH had fitted in the earlier thread.

Cheers

Gas bonnet struts

Postby SR53OL on Wed, 28 May 2008 7:44 +0000

Got my kit yesterday from Thailand. Looking at the pics above it appears that the SR5 has a different left hand guard to that of the pic above. Had to cut a groove out of the bracket so as to fit the bonnet struct bracket to the car. All going well just needed to check the tension on the bolts, then snap off come the bolt. Bugger! anyway going to a mates place tommorrow to us an easyout to remove the broken bolt. Other than that the fitting was relatively easy i'll post a pic when its done.

As you can see the bonnet bracket fits over the silver plate after a slight modification. Used a grinder to cut a groove in the silver plate to allow the bonnet bracket to fit through the gap created.

After snapping the head off one the guard bolts I decided to use longer high tensile bolts for the guards to replace. After painting them black they just blend in and it all works great. Total cost $78.00 AUD. Cheers Peter

I know I'm digging up an old thread here but I just fitted some eBay ones $99 for 2012 and up clears my second battery easily slightly different design than above, after fitting I have noticed when the bonnet is up there is movement in the bonnet for example if i push up near the front of the bonnet is seems to flex on the brackets near the back now I can see by looking at the way they attach there was going to be some flex but I'm just wondering if anyone has had any problems with this after long term use like bolts pulling out or stretching in the mount etc.

Here's the link to the ones I bought http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130932804132?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Some pics to show it does clear my battery, it just touches on the side but when I loosen the clamp I can push it over a few mm and the top clamp bolt just clears it on close which could be trimmed as well if needed.

Hey GazzaShaggy,

so the clearance issue is the bottom pivot point, not the strut itself hitting the top of 2nd batt? How much room do we need in there?

You owe me one just measured for you even though its raining
Between the inside bonnet edge and battery 25mm is enough and yeah the top of the battery on mine at least is no issue I'll keep an eye on it to make sure its not touching but if it is I'll just cut 5-10mm off the bolt that holds the battery in.

Yeah, may be a bit touch and go on mine...I have 2nd battery cables all running up there to...
