Bull bar paint

Postby stilly1984 on Sat, 23 May 2015 2:51 +0000

I have steel bull bar with a hammer tone paint. It's looking a bit dull and I also don't like the hammer tone finish. What are people's thoughts on sanding it back and reprinting it? Will it last or is powder coating a better option? I live remote NT so powder coating is going to be difficult logistically.

What paint finish have people used? ie gloss, satin, matte.

Cheers

Mines Gloss white (from ARB) and it stays clean easily.
Only disadvantage is that the Headlights do reflect a bit on the Corner Hoops. I willing to live with that though.

Powdercoating will be better, but if painting i'd say satin finish would be the pick, easier to clean than matte, and hides minor scuffs/ scratches better than gloss.

I dont understand peoples obsession with powder coating, is it the cool name?
With either process it is the preparation that is important, decent prep work and a spray can job would outlast your car.

I understand a perfectly prepared and finished powder coat job would be best but that is hard to come by. Ever seen powder coat stick to a cheapo Bunnings BBQ or outdoor furniture?

Personally I would just get it painted by a local panel beater. You could even get a spray can made up with the same paint for future touch ups.

Line-X if available would be the most durable option if available anywhere near.
Can be touched-up and much tougher as compared to Powder-Coat or paint...

If you just want the powder coated finish, a little trick that I learnt for repair/patch work only (maybe not for a whole bar) was to spray matt black paint and then hit it with a clear coat while the black is still wet, that way it dries together. suprisingly gets pretty close to a powder coated finish.

I only use that to fix up little marks a scratches if I take any paint off.

Hope it helps!
