Hi,

I am rebuilding a 1994 1KZ-TE. The idle gear no1 and the shaft are worn and need to be replaced. There was no problem getting the gear but the I cant find the original shaft part number 1358167040. The only part available is 1358167041but it is different than the original and does not fit into the block. I've read there were issues with this part in the early engines and it was redesigned. The new part does have larger oil holes and larger bolts.

What are my options? Surely there is something I can do. Do I drill out the block approximately 4mm deep to accomadate the new part.

Any tips?

Thanks

Its a good question - I've seen on a few forums a very similar problem. Perhaps the solution is a new short block :( or something from a wrecker - some wreckers here might ship to Canada

hiluxxury,

jp-carparts.com and other parts suppliers have confirmed the part (1358167040) is no longer made so I will check the auto wreckers in Australia. Although I hesitate to use the original part as it was obviously a bad design that caused it be be a high failure item.

I guess I have 2 choices, modify the block or modify the part. I'd prefer to drill a 13mm hole approx 4.5mm into 'the oil outlet of the block so the shaft sits flush with the mounts. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks again for your help.

3rd Option?
Check around your local wreckers and see if you can't change out the whole engine from a "slightly" different model Hilux? My dream (in a few hundred thou' Kms time) would be to swap out my naturally aspirated diesel with a turbo diesel, I might go up hills without changing gears so often then.
;)

I think the modification would be worth a shot if you dont find another solution. I see that you have asked the question on IH8MUD - hopefully someone there will provide a solution.

The 1kz wasn't sold in North America so the only ones around are from the few JDM imports. Finding parts at an auto wrecker is next to impossible. The original part was obviously defective so I'd rather use the new part.

I spent a lot of money putting repair liners in this older block. I didnt know this issue existed. I am in too deep to get a different block now witthout at least trying to usewhat I have. I think I will drill the oil passage to 13mm and 4.5mm deep when it warms up outside. We are going through a record breaking deep freeze this week. I doubt Toyota would have changed the block casting as it would have been expensive to change the production line. I am guessing they just changed just the way they machined the area for the shaft, so I should be fine drilling it out. I guess I will find out.
