Accessing oil sump on 2kd-ftv hilux.

Postby jusspb on Sun, 23 Oct 2016 10:34 +0000

So got a 2004 2kd-ftv hilux what had rolled over and landed into a pond. Body and electrical has been fixed but won't start.
Even with break cleaner, directly into manifold, it's not starting and one engine expert quessed it was hydrolocked.
Question, to access the con-rods for measurments. What I need to remove to access the oil sump? It seems pretty tight fit between front axle and the engine.

Cheers!

A compression test may be little easier than measuring the rods

Compression test is not really accurate, since when cranking it acts as a pump and pumps the measurement up, so it is not giving me an accurate result and it's pretty tough to just crank the engine one rotation.
I could alwats use the oscilloscope and measure the Starter amps, so I can see, if there is any difference, but the engine has run 200k km, so it might be sligthly different anyway and If I don't notice a huge difference it's no good anyways.
But I have tough about different options and best one's still are either to remove the engine head or the oil sump. I was hoping it is easier to remove the oil sump, but it sits directly above front axle and I am not sure, if it comes out, with out removing the front axle.

Any ideas guys? Who has removed oil pan/sump before? on that d4d 2.5td engine?

Compression test will definitely show a problem, if ya crank for the same time for each cylinder then compare the four. If she has been hydraulic locked them being a diesel you can nearly be certain of a bent rod or damaged pistons or both. Even seen cranks twist in half!

If you think it has been hydrolocked and damaged, the reason it won't start is lack of compression due to the reasons mentioned above, a compression test will confirm this.

So a question is it easier to remove injectors then to remove oil pan?:) (Since I know how crazy it is to access injectors and remove them)

Much easier than removing the sump. Plus you can stick a camera down there and check for cracks.

Hmm, maybe get someone with the right gear to have a quick look?

Well so far removed all the injectors and measured the distance between piston in top dead center and injector mounting hole and all the distances were the same.

Tomorrow going to measure the compression. Does someone have a manual in hand and have the same info that compression should be between 2700kpa max and 2200kpa min. max difference between cylinders 500kpa?

But I did notice some rust on camshafts, so somekind of moisture still has got into the engine. Took some off, but I quess when I get the engine running it will come off and I should change the oil again as soon as possible ( new oil in after accident 0km/miles driven, but I quess still contaminated.
Any ideas suggestions?
