What other Hilux engines will fit in my 1999 SR5 2.7L 4x4?

Hi all,

My 1999 SR5 4x4 2.7L petrol with the 3RZ-FE (RZN169R) has blown a head gasket and I am looking to replace the engine. Just wondering what other Hilux engines (if any) will fit without, or with only minor modification, instead of the 2.7L petrol it came with.

Also, if anyone has any tips on where to source a suitable replacement engine, they would be welcomed. I am not particularly mechanical and not in a position to do much work myself (no workshop or good tools), so keep that in mind. If I can buy a 2nd hand motor with low kms in Australia OR get a cheap import (whether 2nd hand or reco'd) I will be VERY happy. I live on the Central Coast NSW if anyone can remove/install it for me (will be happy to pay if less than a mechanic would charge).

Suggestions? Advice?

Easy and cheap is a low km engine that is exactly the same
Not a lot options really unless you spend more the a low km replacement

And if it only done a head gasket, why not just fit a reco head on it and get a VRS gasket kit from the same company supplying head,
It's a very simply job any shop can do with ease
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Found a low km replacement: $2000. Fitted and fluided will cost about another $1000

Sounds like getting reco head and gasket kit might be a spot cheaper. I'll look into it. Thanks for the advice.

BTW, the low km engine (125,000 kms) is another 3RZ but off a 2 wheel drive. The guy at the wreckers said they just swap the sump pan and maybe a couple of other little things. Does that sound right to you?

Get a few quotes locally to do the head and head gasket. If there is more going on and once you've got it running again you could always trade it on a good low kM V6 SR5. That would probably be cheaper than trying to upgrade the engine to anything else other than the 2.7L.

Here is a recoed complete head and gaskets on Ebay, not really cheap though (check model numbers too):

By the time the work is done by a mechanic it is going to cost you around $2000.

Thankyou very much for that advice. I have started leaning more towards reco than replacement engine just so I have piece of mind (as will the next buyer) in terms of expected engine longevity. :)
